Chattanooga Lookouts News Release

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Mississippi's Jason Heyward showed fans at AT&T Field why he is the talk of baseball on Saturday night. The much-heralded prospect showed all aspects of his game by scoring a run, driving home a run, stealing a base, and flashing some leather in right field to lead the M-Braves to a 7-1 victory over the Lookouts. Back-to-back triples in the first from Brandon Hicks and Heyward gave the M-Braves an early 1-0 lead. Mississippi would strike again in the fifth with another run. Kody Kirkland led off with a single and made his way to second on a Travis Jones single. After a Benji Johnson fly, which advanced Kirkland to third, Tim Gustafson laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Kirkland from third. The M-Braves extended their lead to 5-0 in the sixth by plating three more runs. With one out, Matt Sartor struck out Heyward, but the strikeout pitch ended up rolling to the backstop, allowing the speedy Heyward to reach first. After swiping second, Freddie Freeman singled to left to put runners at the corners. Concepcion Rodriguez then nailed a double to score both runners. With two outs, Jones single to center to bring home Rodriguez. Chattanooga finally entered the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth. Justin Sellers hit a one-out double and eventually found his way home on a Trayvon Robinson RBI single to account for the lone run for the Lookouts. Mississippi added a superfluous run in the ninth to extend their lead to 7-1. Matt Young led off with a single and advanced to second on a Brandon Hicks walk. A subsequent fielding error by second baseman Russ Mitchell on a Heyward batted ball allowed Young to score from second. Tim Gustafson (2-4) earned the win for Mississippi by throwing 7.2 innings of shutout baseball. He yielded just five hits and two walks, while striking out six in the winning effort. Alberto Bastardo (5-3) took the loss. He went five innings, surrendering two runs on four hits and two walks. He struck out two in the losing effort. The Chattanooga Lookouts and Mississippi Braves will continue their five-game series at 2:15 P.M., tomorrow. Tickets for this game or any other Lookouts home game can be purchased at the Lookouts Box Office at AT&T Field, online at www.lookouts.com, or by calling (423) 267-4849.
