Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - The Clinton LumberKings and Beloit Snappers played a close game for most of the night, until the contest got ugly in extra-frames. Reliever Julian Cordero surrendered five runs, three of them earned in a rough 12th inning that saw two errors, two balks and the ejections of manager Andy Fox and pitching coach Stan Hilton.

Cordero (L, 1-3) pitched well through his first three innings of work, but hit the wall as he worked in the top of the 12th. After getting a quick out to start the inning, Cordero allowed a single to Paul Kelly and a walk to Tarrence Patterson. Beloit second-baseman Steve Tolleson cracked a ground-single to right field that plated Kelly for the go-ahead run, but the scoring wasn't over. Patterson went on to score on a balk, and Tolleson came home on a sacrifice fly by Caleb Moore. A pair of errors by L-Kings third baseman David Peterson led to two unearned runs, one of which crossing on a second balk. Upon the second balk call to Cordero, both manager Andy Fox and pitching coach Stan Hilton were ejected for arguing with the base umpire.

Frank Mata (W, 1-1) picked up the win, setting the L-Kings down in order in the bottom of the 12th. He worked two scoreless innings and struck out a pair in getting his first win of the year.

The LumberKings battled to a 4-4 tie in regulation on the back of starter Jake Rasner. Rasner coasted through his first five innings, but ran into trouble in the sixth. A two-run single by Beloit's Erik Lis made it a one-run game, and an unearned run crossed as Juan Portes delivered an RBI-single to tie the game. Rasner left after six, allowing three earned runs on seven hits, walking none and striking out eight.

Snappers starter Adam Hawes had a rough outing, exiting after just 2 2/3 innings. Hawes gave up three runs in the bottom of the third, allowing an RBI double off the left field wall to Terry Blunt and a two-run single to Joe Kemp that plated John Mayberry and Blunt. The LumberKings led 4-0 as Hawes gave way to the bullpen, but Beloit's relief corps shut down the L-Kings the rest of the night.

Beloit lefthander Alexander Smit pitched 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit. Yohan Pino came on for an additional four innings of shutout baseball.

For the LumberKings, second-baseman Jose Vallejo extended his hitting streak to seven games with a 2-for-6 night. Kemp led the team at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a triple and two RBI's.

The series concludes tomorrow evening at Alliant Energy Field, game time set for 6:00pm. Listen to the game on AM 1340 KROS in Clinton, or live on the web at www.lumberkings.com.
