LumberKings Hand Cedar Rapids Win

Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, Iowa - The LumberKings had all but wrapped up their third consecutive win before they gave Cedar Rapids an early Christmas present by allowing them to score three runs in the top of the ninth inning for a 5-4 win.

Clinton scored a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 4-2 lead after Cedar Rapids scored the first two runs on the game.

Protecting a 4-2 lead, Kyle Hunter was summoned to get the final out in the eighth with Kevin Moesquit on first base. Hunter induced a pop up by Ryan Jones to end the frame. After Clinton went quietly in the bottom of the eighth, Hunter came back out for the ninth.

Back-to-back singles by Kaleb Cowart and Frazier Hall put runners and first and second with no outs. Trevor Hairgrove laid a bunt down the third base line that was scooped by Ramon Morla but the third baseman threw in the dirt to first and the ball went into right field. Cowart scored and Hall went to third with Hairgrove advancing to second on the error. With the infield drawn in, Matt Scioscia grounded out to Dillon Hazlett at second base. Abel Baker followed by hitting a ground ball to Dan Paolini at first, he threw home in time to cut down Hall but he snuck in around the tag of Mike Dowd. With the game tied at 4-4, Chevy Clarke flied to right to score Hairgrove with the go-ahead run.

Clinton went in order in the ninth inning against Cedar Rapids closer Ty Kelley. The two teams will play the rubber match on Monday night at 7:00 at Ashford University Field. Clinton sends left-hander Jeremy Dobbs (0-1, 4.91) to the mound and Cedar Rapids counters with right-hander Austin Wood (2-4, 4.66).
