Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release

MUSKEGON, Michigan - In a back-and-forth offensive shootout, the Muskegon Lumberjacks were unable to hold another third period lead as they were able to gain a point in the standings, but fall in another shootout this time to the Youngstown Phantoms and lose 5-4 tonight at the L.C. Walker Arena.

The Lumberjacks (22-13-8, 52 points) were able to tally the game's first goal just 1:02 into the game with Tyler Heinonen's team-leading 15th goal of the season assisted by Chad McDonald and Rasmus Bengtsson to make it 1-0 Muskegon. Youngstown would counter back at the 8:23 mark with a goal from Ryan Lowney that was assisted by Cam Brown and Sam Anas to tie the game at 1-1. Late in the first period, Joe Cox tipped an intended outlet pass in front of Phantoms Goaltender Sean Romeo (16-13-0) into the net for his 13th goal of the season to give the Lumberjacks a 2-1 lead. Youngstown would answer again with 1:23 left in the first on the power play from Luke Stork that was helped by Ryan Lowney and Austin Cangelosi to tie the game at 2-2 after one period of play

Early in the second period at the 4:26 mark, Cox would get his second of the night on a breakaway courtesy of a good outlet pass from Cullen Hurley to give Muskegon another lead at 3-2. However, the Phantoms would continue to retaliate at the 8:11 mark on the man advantage once again courtesy of a tip in front Lumberjacks Goaltender Kevin Lindskoug (18-9-5) from Alexander Dahl to tie the game at 3-3 (assisted by Jimmy Mazza and Daniel Renouf). A few minutes later at the 12:45 mark, Ben Foster would do some grunt work of his own tipping a shot from Cameron Darcy past Romeo for his 14th goal of the season to give the home team their fourth lead of the night at 4-3 (secondary assist to Adam Gilmour).

The score would remain the same into the third period when the Phantoms (20-18-0, 40 points) would tally the equalizer for the fourth time of the night at the 5:31 mark from Eric Sweetman as he ripped a shot home in the slot past Lindskoug to tie the game at 4-4 (assisted by Cangelosi and Stork).

No scoring would be had the rest of regulation, and the game would go into overtime where Lindskoug would make some huge saves late to keep the Lumberjacks' hopes alive. The overtime would feature no scoring as well, so the game would continue into a shootout.

In the shootout, both teams would capitalize on their first shooters (Sam Anas for Youngstown and Chad McDonald for Muskegon), but Muskegon would take a 2-1 lead after two rounds courtesy of Rasmus Bengtsson's goal. However, Youngstown would tally the equalizer in the final round from Austin Cangelosi to tie the shootout at 2-2. Joe Cox would not net the game-winner for the Lumberjacks in the third round, so the shootout would go into sudden death. Youngstown would take a 3-2 lead with a goal from Nathan Walker, and the Lumberjacks would not pull even as Tyler Heinonen's attempt in the fourth round as saved by Romeo's skate blade.

The Phantoms tallied two power play goals on four chances, while Muskegon had only one power play opportunity on the night. Lindskoug stopped a season-high 48 shots in the shootout loss, while Romeo stopped 30 of 34 shots for the Phantoms. Joe Cox led the Lumberjacks offense with two goals, while the Phantoms were led by three players with two points each in Austin Cangelosi (two assists), Ryan Lowney (one goal and one assist), and Luke Stork (one goal and one assist). Muskegon falls to 1-2-1 against Youngstown this season.
