Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, OH - Heading into the Midwest League playoffs, the Lansing Lugnuts are playing some of their best baseball of the season. The Lugnuts needed 10 innings but picked up their eighth consecutive win, dropping the Dayton Dragons 4-3 in the opening game of a two game series at Fifth Third Field. The Dragons have dropped four in a row and have seen their lead over the Lugnuts climb to within one half game of Dayton for the second best record in the Eastern Division

Lansing rallied with two outs in the top of the second to score the first run of the night against Dayton starter Travis Webb (ND). Matt Lane drew a two-out walk and scored on a Paul Franko double down the left field line. For the third night in a row, Lansing took a 1-0 lead on the Miami Valley's team.

Lugnuts starter Julio Pinto (ND) was making just his seventh start of the season, but looked like a seasoned veteran in shutting out the Dragons through 5.0 innings. Pinto allowed just two hits while striking out six and walking none in earning a no decision.

Dayton finally tied the game at 1-1 with a run against reliever Edward Rodriguez (ND) in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, Keltavious Jones chopped an infield single to the second baseman. He was erased on a fielder's choice from Logan Parker, but a runner was still on first base with two outs for Drew Stubbs. After a wild pitch moved Parker to second base, Stubbs came through with a single to center to knot the game at one apiece.

Lansing scored two more runs in the 8 th inning, sending eight men to the plate without a single hitter putting a ball into play. Jonathan Jaspe walked to start the inning against Misael DeJesus (ND), and was still at first base two batters later after two strikeouts. DeJesus then walked pinch hitter Sean Shoffitt to put runners at first and second. A balk moved each runner up 90 feet, and then another walk to Raul Barron loaded the bases. Jonathan Diaz was hit by a pitch on a 0-2 offering, forcing in a run to give Lansing the 2-1 lead, still without having put a ball in play. Another walk to Chris Emanuele forced in another run for the 3-1 lead before Travis Snider struck out to finally end the inning.

Dayton tied the game with two more runs against Rodriguez in the bottom of the eighth. Zack Cozart led off the frame with a double to left and Jones drew a walk to put runners at first and second. The Lugnuts brought in Chris Reddout (WP, 8-1) who got Parker to pop up a bunt for the first out. Stubbs picked up his second RBI of the night with a single to right, scoring Cozart to bring the Dragons within one. On a fielder's choice from Juan Francisco, Jones came in to score, tying the game at 3-3.

The game headed to extra innings tied at three. Terrell Young (LP, 1-4) entered the ballgame with an ERA of 37.80 in two appearances against Lansing this season, allowing seven earned runs in 1.2 innings. The right hander got through the ninth unscathed, but allowed a run in the top of the tenth to put Lansing ahead 4-3. Diaz tripled with one out and scored on a wild pitch for the one run lead.

The Dragons and Lugnuts wrap up the series Friday night at Fifth Third Field with a 7:00 PM first pitch. Dayton is expected to start RHP Daniel Guerrero (4-4, 4.18 ERA) while the Lugnuts are scheduled to throw RHP Graham Godfrey (6-6, 3.93 ERA). 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will carry the game live beginning with the Dragons Pre Game Show at 6:30 PM .
