Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Swing of the Quad Cities ran out of bullpen arms after 12 innings on Monday night and were forced to throw four innings with position players, eventually falling to the Lansing Lugnuts, 11-10, after 16 innings and five hours and 31 minutes.

Quad Cities (16-13, 54-44) got three innings from first baseman Tim Dorn, a former pitcher, and one from Jose Garcia, who eventually gave up the game-winning homer in the top of the 16th. Lansing (18-12, 53-46) thought they had the game won after a three-run top of the 14th, but the Swing took advantage of two of the Lugnuts' six errors to tie the score in the bottom half of the frame.

After Dorn's three innings of work, Garcia (0-1) took over with a 10-10 tie in the 16th. The 19-year-old infielder from Venezuela retired the first two batters of the frame without incident, but his first pitch to Raul Barron was driven out of the yard to right for a solo homer and an 11-10 lead.

Chris Reddout (4-1) earned the win for Lansing, tossing 2.1 innings to close out the game.

During regulation, the Swing led most of the way until the Lugnuts tied things up late.

Quad Cities jumped out to a lead in the very first inning as four straight balls to Antone DeJesus gave Quad Cities a leadoff baserunner. He was standing at second with two away when Steven Hill drove a double to the gap in right-center, plating the runner for a 1-0 lead.

In the ensuing frames, a pair of home runs helped that lead grow. After Nick Derba drew a leadoff walk in the second, Christian Lopez belted a two-run homer to left field for his fourth bomb of the year. One inning later, Jared Schweitzer led off the third with a towering solo shot, as his 10th longball of the season pushed the Swing lead to 4-0.

But by the fifth inning, the Lugnuts had cut that deficit in half. After Chris Emanuele led off the fourth with a single, Matt Liuzza doubled him home to put Lansing on the board. Sean Shoffit then led off the fifth with a solo homer to make it a 4-2 game.

Quad Cities added a run in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead, but Lansing rallied again in the sixth to pull within one. After a close pickoff play at first with two outs went against the Swing to keep the inning alive, Scott Campbell delivered a two-run double to make it a 5-4 game.

The Swing got some breathing room in the sixth, scoring a pair of runs after taking consecutive one-out walks. There were two away when DeJesus and Schweitzer each checked in with run-scoring singles, pushing the advantage to 7-4.

But in the top of the eighth, a crucial error allowed Lansing back into the game. Yuber Rodriguez led off the frame with a homer to left-center that sparked the offense. Liuza followed with a double and later scored on a one-out single by Campbell to cut the Swing lead to 7-6. Quad Cities then went to Kenny Maiques to look for the five-out save, but as the closer struck out the next batter a wild pitch allowed Campbell to move all the way from first to third. On the very next pitch Travis Snider sent a soft bouncer to short, but Lopez bobbled the ball and failed to make the play, allowing Campbell to score and tie the game at 7-7.
