Texas Copperheads News Release

Houston, TX - Robert Kent accounted for 10 TDs to lead the Lubbock Renegades to a 75-42 victory over the Texas Copperheads. The Renegades raise their record to 6-2 while the Copperheads fall to 1-8.

On the first offensive play of the game, Lubbock DB LaRico Stevenson recovered a Rudy Carlton fumble and rambled 20 yards for a TD. Texas answered with a 22 yard Nick Gatto FG to close the gap to 7-3, but would never get any closer on the evening.

On the ensuing possession, the Robert Kent show kicked into high gear. After completing passes of 16 and 28 yards to WR Corey White, Kent scored his first TD of the night on a 1 yard run to give Lubbock a 14-3 lead with 7:47 to play in the 1st quarter. On Lubbock's next 5 possessions Kent would throw for 4 TD passes (15, 22, 4, 31) and run for a 2nd one yard score to lead Lubbock to a 49-29 first half lead.

After a poor showing last week against Austin, the Copperheads' offense showed signs of life as Armar Watson scored Texas' first TD of the night on a 4 yard run at the 4:00 mark of the 1st quarter. Carlton would also find newcomer Gabriel Hatchett with two 2nd quarter scoring passes of 20 and 38 yards, the latter on the last play of the first half.

Two of Kent's first half TD passes went to Alvance Robinson. Kent and Robinson would match that effort and connect on 2 second half scoring plays (45, 21) as well. Kent would also find Reggie Glover for 45 yards and Ray Redmond for 1 yard to close out Lubbock's 2nd half scoring. Kent's final TD pass to Redmond came on the last play of the game as Lubbock rushed to the line of scrimmage to run a final play as time was running out.

In addition to his two scoring runs Kent completed 22 of 32 passes for 410 yards, 8 TDs (to 4 different receivers) and 2 interceptions on the evening. For his efforts, Kent was recognized as the "Schutt Offensive Player of the Game".

Texas' second half scores came on a 20 yard run by David Kennebrew and a 10 yard Carlton to Watson pass. Watson's impressive TD grab came on a tipped ball. The catch was recognized as the "Cutter's Catch of the Game". Watson also earned recognition as the "JLS Ironman of the Game" for the 4th consecutive week. In addition to his two scores, Watson finished the game with 217 all purpose yards (6 rushing, 70 receiving and 141 on kick returns). Watson's status for the evening wasn't determined until a few hours before kick off. Watson came in to tonight's game nursing a rib injury suffered last week against Austin.

The Copperheads will not play next weekend as they have a week 10 bye. Texas travels to Rio Grande Valley and Bossier-Shreveport in weeks 11 and 12 before returning to the Berry Center on Saturday June 21, 2008 for a 7:30pm meeting with the Corpus Christi Sharks.
