Charleston Lowgators News Release

North Charleston, S.C. (October 28, 2002) – The North Charleston Lowgators will make their selections in the 2002 NBDL Player Draft via conference call alongside fans, season ticket holders, sponsors and local media during the Lowgators 2002 NBDL Draft Party on Thursday, October 31 at Sportz Café in North Charleston.

The event is a unique opportunity for fans and media alike to go behind the scenes in the Lowgators war room while head coach Doug Marty and assistant coach Kelvin Upshaw make critical decisions ultimately affecting the composition of the team’s 2002-03 roster.

The Lowgators 2002 NBDL Draft Party at Sportz Café is open to the public. There will also be a VIP area upstairs available to the Lowgators season ticket holders and sponsors. Doors for the Lowgators 2002 NBDL Draft Party will open at 4:30 p.m. The first round of the draft will begin at 5 p.m. Sportz is located across from the North Charleston Coliseum at 3025 West Montague Avenue.

"The NBDL Draft Party is a great way for our local basketball fans to inside the war room and see some of the inner workings of putting the team together," said Marty. "It’s a unique way for us to make contact with our season ticket holders and welcome them to the beginning of a new season of Lowgators basketball."

The league’s second annual draft will take place over 14 rounds and be conducted via conference call from locations in each of the eight NBDL markets. The selection process will operate in like fashion to last year’s draft, with each team having one pick in each of the 14 rounds. Teams will have up to three minutes to make a selection in each round. No trades will be permitted during the draft and only players signed to an NBDL Standard Player Contract will be eligible to be drafted.

The draft order is based upon how each team finished last season. The Lowgators, who finished in second place after losing in finals, have the seventh pick in the first round of this year’s draft. The Roanoke Dazzle has the first pick in this year’s draft.

In the league’s inaugural draft last year, the Lowgators selected center Neil "Swat" Edwards from the York College with the sixth pick in the first round. The 6’11" Edwards went on to average 4.2 ppg and 4.6 rpg (.386 FG%, .597 FT%) in 25 starts.

In one of the biggest steals of last year’s draft, the Lowgators selected guard/forward Fred House from the University of Southern Utah with the 46th pick in the sixth round. The 6’5" House went on to win the 2002-2003 NBDL Rookie of the Year, averaging 13.4 ppg and 4.5 rpg (.458 FG%, .744 FT%) in 56 starts. House helped lead the club to an NBDL-best 36-20 regular season mark and a berth in the NBDL Finals. He spent the summer on the Atlanta Hawks training camp squad before being cut recently due to lack of backcourt positions available.

The North Charleston Lowgators open the 2002-03 NBDL season Friday, November 15, 2002 on the road against the Mobile Revelers at the Mobile Civic Center. The Lowgators home opener is a rematch of last year’s NBDL Finals on Sunday, November 17 against the defending champion Greenville Groove at the North Charleston Coliseum. Lowgators season tickets are currently on sale. For information, call (843) 460-1000 or visit www.northcharlestonlowgators.com.
