Loop to Represent Sox in High-A Midsummer Classic
June 7, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Salem Red Sox News Release
Frederick, MD (June 7, 2009) - Salem reliever Derrick Loop will be the Red Sox' lone representative in the Carolina League-California League All-Star Game, it was announced as Carolina League unveiled its 2009 All-Stars today. Loop has excelled since inheriting the closer's role, going 2-3 with six saves and a 2.68 ERA. The southpaw has also compiled 39 strikeouts in 37 innings pitched, leads the league in appearances with 22, and has earned the reputation as the best pickoff specialist in A-ball. Loop's unique move to first base has cut down 11 runners on the bases on the season.
"I was a bit shocked, especially to be the only member of the team selected," Loop said about hearing the news. "I was elected to a postseason all-star team before in indy ball, but that's just your name on a piece of paper. I haven't playing in anything midseason, nothing this important."
The honor is extra special for Loop because the All-Star Game is set to be played on June 23 at The Diamond, home of the Lake Elsinore Storm, located about 30 minutes away from Loop's hometown of Lake Matthews, California. One year removed from playing independent ball in the Golden Baseball League, the charismatic left-hander is proud to be heading back to the west coast as an All-Star.
"That's the best part of this whole situation," Loop declared, "that I get to play within 30 minutes from family and friends. I've already made a hundred phone calls to people about coming to the game. Well, maybe not 100, but a lot."
The following players will join Loop on the Carolina League All-Star team: Kris Watts, Lynchburg; Brandon Waring, Frederick; Dale Mollenhauer, Winston-Salem; Pedro Florimon, Frederick; Lonnie Chisenhall, Kinston; Jason Heyward, Myrtle Beach; David Lough, Wilming; Christian Marrero, Winston-Salem; Cody Johnson, Myrtle Beach; Cord Phelps, Kinston; Mike Moustakas, Wilmington; Miles Durham, Lynchburg; Caleb Joseph, Frederick; Eric Berger, Kinston; Zach Britton, Frederick; Daniel Duffy, Wilmington; Luis Lebron, Frederick; Jeff Mandel, Potomac; Brian Matusz, Frederick; Brad Meyers, Potomac; Charles Shirek, Winston-Salem; Everett Teaford, Wilmington.
The staff will be composed of Rocket Wheeler, manager for Myrtle Beach, Wally Whitehurst, hitting coach for Lynchburg, and Jeff Allred, the athletic trainer for Potomac.
