Loons Sputter in Return Home

July 14, 2017 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Great Lakes Loons News Release

MIDLAND, Mich. - With the hopes of ending what is currently their longest losing streak since July 2016, it will have to wait another day for the Great Lakes Loons as they let a couple bad innings sink them 7-2 against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Wednesday night. The visitors scored three runs in both the 7th and 8th innings to open the floodgates and steal the series opener.

After being one of only two teams in the Midwest League (the other being the West Michigan Whitecaps) to post a winning record in both May and June this season, the Loons have posted a meager 2-9 mark so far in July. It was the first time since April and May of 2012 that the team posted a winning record in consecutive months. The Loons have now lost six in a row and 10 of their last 12 games.

With Leo Crawford making his 16th start for Great Lakes (8-12, 44-45) this season, Jared Walker did his part as he erased an early deficit with his third home run of the season in the bottom of the 3rd. Crawford then cruised for the Loons until he encountered trouble in the 7th.

Devin Hairston doubled to begin the frame and Crawford (L, 4-8) proceeded to walk the next two batters to load the bases and exit the game. Insert reliever Angel German and what followed was back-to-back singles from Gilbert Lara and Demi Orimoloye. After Garrett Hope doubled in a run to pull the Loons one closer at 4-2 in the bottom half of the 7th, the Timber Rattlers (8-12, 34-54) kept their foot on the gas with three more runs in the 8th to put the game out of reach.

Gavin Lux was the lone Loons player to have a multi-hit game, an impressive one at that going 3-for-4 with a walk on the night. Newcomer Jeremiah Muhammad made his second appearance out of the bullpen for Great Lakes and was equally impactful facing the minimum over two innings and with three strikeouts. Daniel Brown (W, 4-1) picked up the win for Wisconsin.

The series and six-game homestand rolls on Thursday when Imani Abdullah (0-1, 6.23 ERA) will take the mound for the Loons against Wisconsin's Zack Brown (2-4, 3.88 ERA). It is $1 Family Feast Night presented by Chemical Bank at the ballpark where fans can get dollar hot dogs, chips, drinks and ice cream sandwiches. The X-Pogo Stunt Team will also be on hand to entertain the crowd.
