Loons Even Series with Cougars
April 29, 2012 - Midwest League (MWL1) - Kane County Cougars News Release
MIDLAND, Mich. - Scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning, the Great Lakes Loons made the early advantage stick in a 2-1 victory over the Kane County Cougars on Sunday afternoon at Dow Diamond.
Brooks Pounders (0-1) walked James Baldwin and Joe Winker with one out in the first before fanning Scott Schebler while Baldwin swiped third. Devin Shines followed that with a single to right, scoring Baldwin and putting Winker at third. Pratt Maynard then bounced to short, but Orlando Calixte booted it, allowing Winker to touch home.
Gustavo Gomez (3-1) kept the Cougars (11-13) off balance for five innings before they finally touched him up in the sixth. Justin Trapp singled with one out and advanced to second on a knock by Danny Mateo. Jorge Bonifacio ended Gomez's day by singling to center, scoring Trapp to cut the Great Lakes (12-12) advantage to one.
Eric Eadington replaced Gomez and struck out Lane Adams to leave two men on base. Eadington and Yimi Garcia (S, 4) proceeded to retire a combine 10 in a row to finish the ballgame as the Cougars never threatened again. Santiago Garrido was the only reliever used by the Cougars as he tossed four scoreless frames while allowing just one hit.
The Cougars finish their six-game road swing Monday morning when they take on the Loons at Dow Diamond with a 9:35 a.m. first pitch. Right-hander Aaron Brooks (2-2) starts for the Cougars against fellow righty Arismendy Ozoria (2-0).
