Great Lakes Loons News Release
DAYTON, OH - The Great Lakes Loons rallied from five runs down to score two runs in the eighth and four in the ninth - highlighted by Kyle Russell's two-run single to bring in the tying and go-ahead runs - to defeat the Dayton Dragons 7-6 in dramatic fashion Tuesday night.
The night began with the Dragons' pitchers striking out Loons' hitters at a blistering pace. Dayton starter Matt Fairel fanned 12 in six innings, before giving way to the bullpen. All totaled, Dayton pitching struck out 17, and Fairel left with a 6-1 lead.
In the eighth, Alfredo Silverio and Elian Herrera led off with singles. Silverio later scored on a passed ball and Herrera scored on a single by Austin Gallagher to pull the Loons to within three. They had the bases loaded with one out but failed to score any more.
In the ninth, Anthony Hatch doubled, followed by a Silverio single. Hatch scored on a sac fly by Herrera. With one out, Jaime Pedroza walked. Then Gallagher singled in one to pull the Loons to within one. With Scott Gaffney in the game, Tony Delmonico walked to load the bases. With two strikes on the batter Kyle Russell, he lined a single to right scoring Pedroza and pinch runner Erik Kanaby to give the Loons a 7-6 lead.
Jordan Pratt (1-0) worked a scoreless eighth to pick up the win. Javy Guerra hurled a 1-2-3 ninth for his third save. The bottom two hitters in the Loons' order - Silverio and Herrera - combined to go 5-for-7 at the plate.
The Loons improve to 7-4 with the win. Dayton falls to 1-10 and has now lost nine consecutively.
The Loons continue their series in Dayton Wednesday night. Right-hander Bobby Blevins (0-1, 5.19 ERA) will face Dragons righty Josh Ravin (1-1, 3.60).
The game will be carried live on ESPN 100.9-FM.
The Loons return to Dow Diamond Saturday with the first of four against the Fort Wayne TinCaps, who finally lost their first game of the season tonight. Tickets are available at Loons.com or by calling 989-837-BALL.
