Loons Bid Farewell to NSC in Regular Season Finale Saturday

SAINT PAUL, Minn.-- Minnesota United players, coaches and staff will have a lot on their collective minds Saturday night in Blaine. In what could be the final match of the season for the Loons, it will certainly mark the final North American Soccer League match for Minnesota at the National Sports Center. United hosts the New York Cosmos in a contest that could determine United's playoff fate. United needs a win and Rayo OKC loss to secure the final playoff spot. The match is set to kickoff at 7 p.m. CT. Fans can catch all the action live on My29, ESPN3 and ONE World Sports.
"You want to go out on the right note here because it's been such a good home for us," Minnesota United defender Justin Davis told the assembled media at training this week. "It's fun to see that we've outgrown it as well. A lot of progress has been made here."
Minnesota United will pay homage to the decades-long relationship between the National Sports Center and professional soccer in Minnesota at the match on Saturday. It will surely be an emotional affair for fans, players and staff alike.
On the field, Minnesota United needs a victory to keep its playoff hopes alive. The Loons are coming off a disappointing 1-0 defeat to the Carolina RailHawks last weekend and will need to rebound this Saturday when they host the league-leading New York Cosmos. The good news for United, the last time the Cosmos came to town the Loons secured the first ever victory over their rivals, a thrilling 1-0 stoppage time win thanks to a finish from the league's leading scorer and Golden Boot favorite, Christian Ramirez.
A win Saturday alone won't be enough to make the postseason, United will need Rayo OKC to lose Sunday evening to Indy Eleven. Indy, having already secured a birth in the playoffs will have the unique role of playing spoiler to either the Loons or Eleven. It all comes down to the final weekend of the regular season in the North American Soccer League.
