Frederick Keys News Release

Frederick, MD - The Frederick Keys (52-47/16-13) used seven dominant innings from Lucas Long to shutout the Salem Red Sox (58-40/15-14) 7-0 on Sunday afternoon at Nymeo Field. Ending with a career-high 11 strikeouts, Keys pitching combined to punch out 14 Red Sox batters, one short of a season-best. With the win, the Keys finished their four game set with series split.

Long (6-5) was masterful on the mound, allowing just two hits and three walks over his seven shutout innings. Earning his second win in as many starts, the Minnesota native retired 12 of the last 13 he faced. The start by Long also marked the first time since July 8 that a Frederick starter had pitched seven innings.

Offensively, the Keys pounced on starter Matt Kent early with five consecutive hits to start the first inning. Erick Salcedo, Cam Kneeland, and Wynston Sawyer hit consecutive doubles to bring home two runs. Aderlin Rodriguez followed with an RBI single. Later in the frame, Steve Wilkerson singled in a run with the bases loaded and Josh Hart grounded into a fielder's choice to score another. The Keys sent 10 men to bat in the first and scored five times.

Kent (8-5) settled in after that, tossing four scoreless frames and retiring 12 of the final 13 he faced. The first inning proved too much to overcome though, as the Sox southpaw suffered his fifth loss. In five innings, he allowed five runs on seven hits and a walk while fanning three.

Two more runs would cross the plate for the orange and black in the seventh against Salem reliever German Taveras. Following a double from Hart and a single by Salcedo, Kneeland knocked in Hart from third with on a sharp grounder up the middle. Sawyer grounded into a double play, which scored Salcedo from third for to make it 7-0.

Garrett Cleavinger worked the last two innings, giving up only one hit to go with a walk and three strikeouts.

The Keys hit the road on Monday, as the team embarks on a seven-day trip to Winston-Salem and Wilmington. The team will kick things off in the Triad, with a three-game set against the Dash.
