Daytona Tortugas News Release
DAYTONA BEACH, FL - Shed Long banged the third walkoff hit of the season for the Tortugas, a solo blast into the tennis courts in right field, to propel Daytona to a 6-5 victory in 12 innings over the Dunedin Blue Jays on Sunday evening at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
With a 2-0 count on him, facing RHP Ryan Cook, Long stroked a towering blast, his 10th of the year, over the right-field fence to end the contest.
Daniel Sweet had two RBI for the second straight night, notching a two-run single in the third to put the Tortugas in the lead at that time, 2-1. Nick Senzel, who brought in the same amount of runs as Sweet did on Saturday, singled to center to bring in Sweet in the sixth and give Daytona a 4-3 advantage.
Dunedin got their first tally of the game in the first. Cavan Biggio hit the first pitch he saw out of the park to dead-center field off of RHP Jesus Reyes to get the Blue Jays on the board. They took a 3-2 lead into their half of the fourth when Sweet overran a single to right from J.C. Cardenas, leading to a little league two-run homer. A Carl Wise two-run double in the eighth put Dunedin back in front, 5-4.
In the bottom half of the ninth, Senzel and Gavin LaValley reached right away off of LHP Daniel Young, setting the stage for Garrett Boulware to sacrifice and move them up 90 feet. After an intentional walk to Chris Okey, pinch-hitter Chadwick Tromp chopped a ball to second, permitting everyone to reach and bringing in the tying run, 5-5.
Reyes threw 90 pitches over just 3 2/3 innings for the Tortugas in his start. He yielded six hits, three earned runs, and three walks, while fanning five. RHP Jake Ehret (1-0) got the final out of the top of the 12th to earn the win.
RHP Ryan Cook (4-1) allowed his third homer of the season to be saddled with the loss. RHP Jordan Romano tossed six innings, giving up four hits and just one earned run in his start.
The Tortugas are 1.5 games back of FSL North Division Clearwater as they continue their four game series against the Blue Jays on Belly Buster Monday. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM with The Metcare Pregame Show beginning at 6:50 PM on AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB.
Notes: The Tortugas left seven more men on base in the game and have now left on 31 over their last three games. They have gone 9-for-47 with runners in scoring position during that time... Daytona improved to 5-3 in extra innings with the win... This was the third longest game of the year for the Tortugas, clocking in at 3:48... This was just the second extra inning game at the Jack this season for the Tortugas. They won the first game in extras, 5-4, against Charlotte back on April 20th.... It was the second walk-off home run in Long's career, both coming this season...Daniel Sweet has driven in multiple-runs in back-to-back games for the first time in his career
