Wichita Wingnuts News Release
FARGO, N.D. - A bookend pair of home runs from Logan Watkins and Logan Trowbridge supported another stellar start from Wichita Wingnuts starter Travis Banwart en route to a series clinching 4-1 victory over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks Sunday afternoon.
Wichita (22-13) scored immediately, as Watkins worked the opening at-bat to a full count before blasting his first home run of the season off of RedHawks starter Trey McNutt (1-3).
The lone run seemed to be plenty in the early going for Banwart (4-1). The Wingnuts starter limited the RedHawks (17-17) to a single hit through the first five innings, coming off the bat of Leo Pina with one out in the second. Banwart's outing finished with seven stellar innings in which he allowed only three total base runners, all Fargo-Moorhead base hits, but struck out nine without walking anyone. The nine strikeouts tied a season-high recorded by a Wingnuts pitcher this season.
McNutt settled in after the first, tossing consecutive scoreless frames from the second inning through the fifth, until the Wingnuts broke through again in the sixth. Hunter Clanin singled to start the inning, but was caught stealing. Watkins drew a walk in front of Zach Nehrir's single, before Abel Nieves drove home Watkins from second to double the lead for Banwart.
The RedHawks cut into the deficit in the eighth inning against Wingnuts reliever Felix Carvallo, as Brennan Metzger doubled home Tim Colwell to make the score 2-1.
Wichita returned fire in the top of the ninth inning. With a man aboard, Trowbridge showed bunt before pulling back and belting his first home run to provide the Wingnuts insurance runs.
Daniel Tillman worked around a one-out double in the ninth, striking out two to lock down his tenth save of the season to secure the win for the Wingnuts.
Wichita heads north of the border for a three -game set with the Winnipeg Goldeyes on Monday. Jordan Cooper (3-3, 5.62) will get the start for the Wingnuts, while the Goldeyes will counter with lefty Kevin McGovern (2-3, 3.65).
