Local Players Have Opportunity to Pursue Hoop Dreams

ASHEVILLE, N.C., September 16 – The defending National Basketball Development League champion Asheville Altitude will hold open tryouts Saturday and Sunday, October 23-24 from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. at the UNC-Asheville Recreation Center.

Local tryouts are being sponsored by each of the six NBDL teams in October. With league approval, players from each local tryout could be invited to take part in team training camps that get underway in each NBDL city on November 8.

“Local tryouts provides an excellent opportunity for players, especially within our community, to come and compete at high skill levels while showcasing their talents,” said Altitude head coach Joey Meyer. “Open tryouts give players the opportunity to move one step closer to their NBA dreams.”

Player tryouts feature a series of on-court drills, instruction and scrimmages allowing participants to showcase their talents. Applicants must be 20 years old to tryout and may pre-register by submitting three registration forms along with a $125 nonrefundable fee by Oct. 15. All applicants attempting to register after the pre-registration deadline will be subjected to a $150 nonrefundable fee. Tryouts are limited to the first 100 players to register and no incomplete registrations will be accepted. Once payment and forms are received at the Asheville Altitude Offices, 87 Haywood Street, Asheville NC 28801, applicants will receive a confirmation letter and final details about tryouts.

The Altitude opens the 2004-05 regular season at Fayetteville, Nov. 20, followed by the regular-season home opener against the Huntsville Flight, Nov. 21 at 5:00 p.m. at the Asheville Civic Center.

The NBDL, the NBAÂ’s minor league, includes the Fayetteville Patriots (N.C.), Florida Flame (Ft. Myers), Huntsville Flight (Ala.), Roanoke Dazzle (Va.), Columbus Riverdragons (Ga.) and Asheville Altitude (N.C.).

The league offers players the opportunity to develop their talent in a highly competitive atmosphere under the NBAÂ’s umbrella. Twenty-eight NBDL players representing 39 call-ups, seven coaches six game officials and five athletic trainers have been called up to the NBA since the start of the leagueÂ’s in November 2001.

Designed to help grow the sport of basketball both domestically and internationally, the league also offers fun, family entertainment at affordable prices. The NBDL is a source of on-court talent for the NBAÂ’s 30 teams and is a diverse human resource pool for the NBA and its teams by training employees in management, operations, public relations, sales and marketing positions.
