Saskatoon Blades News Release

Edmonton, Alta. -- The Saskatoon Blades handed the Edmonton Oil Kings their first loss of the season on Wednesday night at Rogers Place thanks to a 5-3 victory. Saskatoon now sits at 4-2-0-0 on the season and will continue their road trip through Alberta on Friday in Calgary against the Hitmen.

Brandon Machado got things started for the Blades with his first goal of the season. The 18-year-old centre collected his own rebound at the side of the Edmonton goal and quickly wrapped around the net to beat Dylan Myskiw making it 1-0 for the visiting Blades.

Eric Florchuk then doubled up the Blades lead with a short-handed marker midway through the second frame. Florchuk, playing in front of friends and family from his nearby hometown of Fort Saskatchewan, went in on the rush with fellow Fort Saskatchewan product Kirby Dach and elected to shoot, beating Myskiw over the glove for his 2nd goal of the season and in as many nights. However, the Oil Kings answered back on their next power play as captain Trey Fix-Wolansky finished off a pretty passing play with a bullet over the glove of Nolan Maier. The 2-1 score held up after 40 minutes with the Blades trailing on the shot clock 26-22.

Saskatoon came out swinging the final period looking to take out the Oil Kings early in the period. First Logan Christensen set up Dawson Davidson who ripped a shot through traffic from the blue line. The goal was Davidson's 2nd of the season with Riley McKay getting the secondary assist for his second point of the road trip.

Just over a minute later, Eric Florchuk shovelled his second of the game thanks to a centering feed from Kirby Dach. Both Fort Saskatchewan boys playing in their backyard earned their second point of the hockey game as their squad took a 4-1 lead. Emil Malysjev picked up the other helper on the play.

With their perfect record on the line, the Oil Kings were quick to respond. Trey Fix-Wolansky scored again, his second of the night and then Wyatt McLeod got Edmonton within one goal to make it a 4-3 game with 2:57 left on the clock.

Then with the net empty, Dawson Davidson dished off for new defence partner Brandon Schuldhaus who then flipped a puck high in the air to Kirby Dach near centre ice. Dach gloved the puck down and got into safe range to easily sink the empty netter for his third point of the evening. The 3 point outing earned Dach 1st star of the game honours.

Nolan Maier was steady in goal making 32 saves for his 4th win of the year. The Blades didn't have any luck on four power play attempts, but they did go 3/4 on the penalty kill with one short-handed marker.

Next stop for the Blades is Calgary on Friday when the meet up with the Hitmen for the first time this season. Game time is 7:00pm.
