Lobsters News and Notes

July 9, 2013 - World TeamTennis (WTT)
Boston Lobsters News Release

The Boston Lobsters opened their Mylan World TeamTennis season against New York on Sunday night in a new venue and with three new players. That overall unfamiliarity could explain how the team headed into the final match against the Sportimes trailing by one game. It might even forgive the squad if the night ended in defeat. But the Lobsters' men's doubles tandem of Eric Butorac and Amir Weintraub would have none of it. The duo won the first three games against Robert Kendrick and Jesse Witten and took control of the set, and overall match, for good, as the Lobsters edged New York 20-18 to bring home the team's first victory at the new Joan Norton Tennis Center.

"I've always said that I'm good tactically and I like to call the plays. But he [Weintraub] came out and executed. His serves were great," said Butorac, a four-veteran of the team and only returning member. "I love playing with younger guys with a lot of talent. I can steer them in the right direction and they can carry the workload," Butorac said. Weintraub and Butorac certainly shined late last night in their 5-2 victory, but the Lobsters (1-0) got solid contributions from all four members, including first-time Lobsters Weintraub, Jill Craybas and Katalin Marosi, which was a welcome sight for head coach Bud Schultz. Schultz points to Craybas, who fell behind 3-1 to Abigail Spears in the women's singles, as Boston fell behind 14-13 in the match. But Craybas rallied to get two more games to tie the score at 3-3. She ultimately fell 5-3, but the score kept the Lobsters close and allowed for Butorac and Weintraub to make the comeback. "Everyone contributed. I told them before the match that win or lose, every game is important," Schultz said. "It's something where if you're down and you can come back and squeeze one more game out, it makes a difference in the final score." Weintraub opened the night at men's singles and was a little slow to get going when he squared off against Witten, dropping the first two games. However, once the Israeli native found his rhythm, he was able to even the set at 4-4 and force a nine-point tiebreaker, which he won 5-2. "I saw him play a lot last year and I thought he played really well. He plays a fun style to watch," Schultz said. "Everyone's going to love watching him wail backhands." Craybas and Marosi lost the second match of the night, 5-2, to Spears and Kveta Peshke, as New York (0-1) took an early 9-7 lead. Marosi immediately bounced back, playing alongside Butorac in mixed doubles, which the Lobsters won 5-2 to reclaim the lead. Boston travelled to play the Springfield Lasers on Monday and the Washington Kastles on Tuesday, before returning home on Wednesday for a rematch with the Sportimes, starting at 7 p.m.

"Boston Lobsters has been a tradition with me and my girlfriends for 5 years now. We are all Moms who love to play tennis for fun and as a competitive outlet. Most of us just picked up a racket and learned in our late 30's and early 40's. We are all very passionate about the sport and Boston Lobsters summer tennis is a such a great venue! I've been working with Darlene every Summer setting up the Peckham group party tent. It's been an incredible opportunity to meet the young rising tennis stars and greats like Martina Navratilova, Anna Kournikova and our favorite John Isner. Last Summer was so special because we got to send off John Isner. After his tennis match at the Boston Lobsters, he went directly to the Olympics. It was so much fun and so exciting! It's also such a great venue for families and kids. The staff at Boston Lobsters make it so much fun with their crazy announcer Steve Calechman & activities the kids can participate on the court in between matches. Honestly, its just a wonderful summertime tradition."
