Lions and Esks Meet in Crucial Friday Night Tilt

October 16, 2012 - Canadian Football League (CFL)
B.C. Lions News Release

The BC Lions (11-4) host the Edmonton Eskimos (7-8) in a crucial divisional battle on Friday, October 19th at 7:00 pm presented by TELUS.

The Lions come off a dominating 37-17 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats last Friday and now have an opportunity to nail down first place in the West Division and a berth in the Western Final with a win over the rejuvenated Eskimos.

Edmonton remains in the West Division playoff hunt after defeating the Saskatchewan Roughriders by a 37-20 score on Saturday. The win pulled the Esks to within a game of the Riders in the standings so Friday's matchup is huge for both clubs.

Lions quarterback Travis Lulay enjoyed one of his best outings of 2012 connecting on 27 of 34 passes for 343 yards and two touchdowns in the Leos' win last week. Yesterday, he was on the receiving end as he and wife Kim welcomed a daughter, Parker on Monday evening.

Running back Andrew Harris continues his campaign to be the West Division's Outstanding Canadian after eclipsing Terry Evanshen's decades-old mark of combined yards by a Canadian back. Harris notched 68 rushing yards on 16 carries and 53 more on five receptions to give him 1,665 yards to date, three better than the old mark. Next up for the phenom is the 1,000-yard rushing plateau which sits just 17 yards away.

On defence, linebacker Adam Bighill and company face Kerry Joseph and an Eskimos offence that has found its groove. The Esks rolled up 37 points on a tough Saskatchewan defence last week and the Lions will need a strong outing and plenty of crowd noise to keep the Green and Gold in check Friday night.

The Lions are 12-1 since returning to BC Place in September last year. The single blemish on their record came earlier this season at the hands of the Eskimos by a 27-14 margin.

CFL Pink

The CFL and its member teams are committed to raising awareness and funds to tackle women's cancers and making a positive difference in communities across the country. CFL PINK is a national campaign that represents the regional efforts of our teams and our dedicated fans.

Fans can join the fight by purchasing official BC Lions pink merchandise with a donation from each sale going to the British Columbia chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society. Merchandise can be found at stadium kiosks or by visiting the BC Lions online store.

In keeping with the pink theme, the first 10,000 fans through the gates will receive a pink clapper courtesy of TELUS. Friday's rendition of our national anthem will be performed by Burnaby's Stephen Scaccia who will also perform at halftime. In 2009, Stephen recorded an album after his aunt and mother were both diagnosed with breast cancer in the same year. All proceeds from the sale of the CD went towards breast cancer research.

Last week, Lions coaches sported their pink polos and jackets during the team's win over Hamilton. They will be outfitted in pink again this week as will the Felions who will be showing their support with pink pom-poms. BC Place's unique LED lighting system will also alternate between BC Lions orange and CFL pink for Friday's tilt.

All of Friday's fun starts at 5:00 pm on the Terry Fox Plaza with the BC Lions Street Party presented by Nissan. In addition to face painting, poster making, interactive games and a performance by the 2012 Felions, fans will also be treated to some great live music courtesy of Venice Queen.

The next BC Lions home game is Friday, October 19th versus the Edmonton Eskimos at 7:00 pm presented by TELUS. Single game tickets for BC Lions regular season games are available by calling 1.855.GO.LIONS or visiting bclions.com.
