Linkous Shines in 5-1 Victory

Wilmington Sharks News Release

The Sharks (5-6) picked up a 10-5 victory against the Mustangs over the weekend, and the bats never cooled down on the four hour journey home from Martinsville, VA. In the first inning against the SwampDogs (6-5), no runs came across in the first, but a two out single from Nathan Becker, and another from Cam McRae showed that the offensive fire was still lit.

"As a team, we're really settling in at the plate. Swinging the wood bats are a little different, and that may be in the back of our minds as we're up there. After using the wood every day for eleven games, we're finally getting used to it", said leadoff batter Steven Linkous.

Wilmington picked up an early lead in the second inning. Joe DeVito led off the frame with an infield single, followed by Tyler Carroll's single to left field. Andrew Siegel swung at the first pitch, hitting it down the third base line - DeVito broke for home, but the ball was bobbled by Jacob Whiting, effectively scoring DeVito. Carroll was later driven home with a two out single from a Linkous liner up the middle. Linkous finished the evening 2-4 with a triple and a walk, a pair of RBIs, and a stolen base.

The plundering in the 7th inning was Linkous's ninth on the year in as many attempts, tying him for the most in the Coastal Plain League. "Coach Black has really helped me this season, with some keys to being more aggressive on the basepaths. I'm going to keep being aggressive, doing what I can to get into scoring position to help out the team", said Linkous.

Beau Dees (2-1) went a full six innings for the Sharks, striking out three, giving up seven hits, yet surrounding just a single run. The bullpen was in full effect in Wilmington. Dees was followed by Kevin Husum in the 7th, Will Shepley in the 8th, and Kyler Stout in the 9th. Stout picked up his fourth save of the year.

Fayetteville will host the Sharks tomorrow evening. The series is at 2-1 in favor of the Sharks.
