Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

RICHMOND, VA - With the Reading Phillies leading the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 9-2, after six innings, the opener of a three-game series was suspended on Monday night due to a light malfunction. The game will be resumed at 6:15 PM on Tuesday night at The Diamond, and will be played to its conclusion. Game two of the series will follow upon the completion of the suspended game. Fans holding tickets for Monday night's suspended game may redeem those tickets for entry into Tuesday's game. Gates will open at 6 PM on Tuesday night.

The R-Phils opened quickly against Squirrels' starter David Mixon in the first inning. Rich Thompson opened the ballgame with a single and Harold Garcia moved him around to third when he followed with a single. A wild-pitch from Mixon opened the scoring as Thompson scored. Mixon walked Michael Spidale and Matt Rizzotti sent a double to left-center field that Darren Ford misread off the bat. As it scooted to the wall, Garcia scored for a 2-0 lead. Timo Perez brought in Spidale with a groundout to first base and Reading led 3-0.

The Squirrels got on the board with a run in the bottom of the first when Reading righty J.C Ramirez walked Ford to start the inning. Two batters later, Brandon Belt tripled through the alley in left-center field to plate Ford with Richmond's first run.

Reading was back at it against Mixon in the second when Tuffy Gosewisch led off with a single. Ramirez bunted him to second and Thompson ripped a double to make it 4-1 R-Phils.

The R-Phils opened up the ballgame with a pair of runs in both the third and fifth innings. Perez belted a two-run home run to right field in the third that stretched the Reading advantage to 6-1. In the fifth, Freddy Galvis contributed an RBI single and a second run scored when Clay Timpner misplayed a ball in right field. Mixon departed in the inning with the R-Phils in front 8-1.

Mixon was charged with a season-high eight runs - seven earned - in 4 2/3 innings of work. He also allowed a season-high 12 hits. He walked one and struck out three.

Richmond finally got back on the board with a lone run against Ramirez in the fifth inning. Aaron Lowenstein led off with a single and Timpner doubled him home into right-center field.

Ramirez got plenty of run support and pitched well. He was still in the game when it was suspended after the sixth inning. To that point, the righty had allowed two runs on five hits, walked one and struck out five.

The R-Phils added another run in the sixth when reliever Andy Sisco walked Galvis with the bases loaded.

Game two will be contested as a nine-inning game and will feature LHP Clayton Tanner (6-6, 3.17) making the start for Richmond against RHP Mike Cisco (2-6, 4.93) for Reading.
