Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, Manitoba -- Veterans took to the ice on Friday as the Brandon Wheat Kings' Main Training Camp got underway at Westman Place.

Over fifty players were split into three teams, with practices and scrimmages the order of the day.

In Friday night's game, veteran Aaron Lewadniuk fired home four goals to pace Team White to a 9-5 victory over Team Gold. One of four 20-year olds battling for three overage spots on the club, Lewadniuk is entering his second season with the Wheat Kings after helping Omaha capture the USHL Championship in the spring of 2008.

While Lewadniuk was busy filling the net, 17-year old rookie Michael Ferland looked comfortable skating on a line with Jesse Sinatynski and Klarc Wilson. The former AAA Midget Wheat King scored twice and set up another for the winners.

Jordan DePape, Scott Glennie and Del Cowan each had a goal and an assist in a losing cause for the Golds, who dropped a 3-2 decision to Team Black earlier in the day.

In that game, second year forward Jesse Hall scored twice but it was Brayden Schenn's goal with twelve minutes remaining in regulation time that proved to be the difference.

Action resumes Saturday morning with a 9:30 scrimmage between Friday's two winning teams - the Whites and the Blacks. A second game is scheduled for Saturday night at 6 p.m., with the curtain set to come down on Camp Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. when the Wheat Kings host their Annual Intrasquad Game.

Fans are invited to attend Saturday's games. However, they're encouraged to use the west main entrance to the Keystone Centre as renovations continue on the private suites inside the arena as well as the main concourse.

Brandon's pre-season opener is Friday night against the visiting Regina Pats.
