Lexington Legends News Release
Cody Jones had three hits and two runs batted in as the Lexington Legends took a 7-5 win in the opener of a three-game series against the Asheville Tourists Monday night in Asheville. The win stopped the Legends' losing streak at five games and evened their season record at 6-6.
The Legends took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a double by Michael Hill and singles by Jones and D.J. Burt, but the Tourists answered with three runs in the bottom of the third. With one out, Max George walked, stole second base, moved to third on a single by Mylz Jones and scored on a single by Sam Hilliard. Brendan Rodgers followed with a single that loaded the bases, and a base hit by Hamlet Marte scored two runs, giving the Tourists a 3-1 lead.
The Legends regained the lead with three runs in the top of the fourth. Amalani Fukofuka singled and scored on a double by Anderson Miller. Mller moved to third on a single by Ben Johnson, and after Hill walked, Jones singled, scoring Miller. Johnson came home as Burt grounded into a double play.
In the top of the fifth, run-scoring singles by Chase Vallot and Johnson gave the Legends a 6-3 lead.
The Tourists scored single runs in the sixth and seventh to cut the lead to one at 6-5, but in the eighth, a walk to Hill and a triple by Jones produced a run to give the Legends their final margin.
Legends starter Foster Griffin (1-1) pitched the first five innings and earned his first victory of the year. He allowed four hits and three runs. Griffin struck out eight batters and walked one.
Franco Terrero relieved Griffin at the start of the sixth inning and worked through the eighth, giving up five hits and two runs, and Danville native Jacob Bodner pitched a scoreless ninth to get his third save of the season.
