Legends Stomp Grasshoppers

May 8, 2006 - South Atlantic League (SAL1) - Lexington Legends News Release

Back-to-back home runs sparked an offensive explosion that helped the Legends crush the Grasshoppers 10-1 on Monday night. The Legends would combine for 14 hits, including four doubles and two triples, in the offensive showcase over Greensboro. Lexington improves to 17-13 and takes sole possession of first place with a half game lead over Delmarva.

The onslaught started in the second inning with one out as Eli Iorg came to bat. Iorg launched a bomb over the left-field bleachers to put the Legends on the board first. On the very next pitch, Mark Ori blasted a homer of his own over the left-field fence to make it 2-0.

The Grasshoppers answered with a run in the top of the third. Augustin Septimo led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on a James Guerrero single. Jeff Van Houten's sacrifice fly plated Septimo to cut the Legends lead to one.

But that is the only run Lexington's pitching staff allowed, as Tip Fairchild picked up the win with 6.2 strong innings.

The Legends got their bats going again in the bottom of the third with Pedro Espinoza's lead-off double. Then Josh Flores doubled, scoring Espinoza.

Flores later scored on J.R. Towles groundout, building the lead back to three.

The hit parade continued for Lexington in the fourth when Ori legged out a triple. Ori scored on Mike Thompson's double to make it 5-1.

The Legends continued to wreak havoc on Greensboro's pitching staff in the sixth, adding two more runs. Ori walked to lead off the inning then advanced to third on Flores' single. With both runners in scoring position, Tommy Manzella delivered a perfectly placed ground ball through the hole at short stop to add two more runs.

Lexington broke out the bats again in the seventh, scoring three runs off three hits. Mitch Einertson led the charge with a double. After Ori was hit by a pitch, Thompson singled to left field, scoring Einertson and advancing Ori to third. Espinoza added his third hit of the game with a bases clearing triple to top off the scoring for the Legends.

Lexington looks to finish off the Grasshoppers Tuesday morning. Game time is set for 10:35 a.m.
