October 31, 2017 - NBA Development League (D-League) - Texas Legends
FRISCO, TX, (Oct. 30, 2017) - The Texas Legends have added three new assistants to complete Head Coach Bob MacKinnon's bench. Kelly Peters, DJ Nelson, and Eric Snow will join Zendon Hamilton and Zachary Chu, who both assisted MacKinnon and the 2016-17 squad to the team's winningest season and a franchise-record five NBA Call-Ups.
Kelly Peters comes to the Legends after serving as an assistant last season with the Santa Cruz Warriors. Peters worked as an advance scout for Golden State for two seasons prior to entering the G League. The San Diego native also spent four years at Turner and CBS helping broadcasters prepare for the NCAA Tournament. Peters' career began at his alma mater, Torrey Pines High School (San Diego, CA), where he helped lead the team to 10 league titles and two CIF Section titles.
DJ Nelson enters his first year of coaching after serving in basketball operations with the Legends for the past four years. Nelson graduated from Texas Christian University. The Plano native has previously served as an international scout for the Legends and has extensive clinic experience.
Eric Snow joins the Legends through the NBA's Assistant Coaches Program (ACP) after spending the past two years at Florida Atlantic University as an assistant coach. Snow played four years at Michigan State and was drafted in the 2nd round of the 1995 NBA Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks. The Ohio-native played 14 years in the NBA, earning All-Defensive Second Team, the NBA Sportsmanship Award, and the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award. Snow moved his career to the front office in 2012 when he became the Director of Player Development for SMU under Hall of Fame Coach Larry Brown. The ACP began in 1988 and has had over 150 former NBA players participate. The program provides former players the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in coaching and explore other areas of the basketball offices based on the participant's interests.
Zendon Hamilton played six years in the NBA followed by four seasons overseas and a stretch with the Springfield Armor of the NBA Development League. Prior to turning pro, Hamilton earned Big East honors four straight years at St. John's. In 2013, Hamilton took his first step into the coaching world at the D-League National Tryouts which led to an assistant position with the Idaho Stampede the following season and ultimately landed him in Frisco with MacKinnon and the Legends. Hamilton played center throughout his career and focuses on the development of the big men with the Legends.
Zachary Chu enters his second season with MacKinnon, Hamilton, and the Legends. Chu came to Frisco after spending the previous season as a player development intern for the Los Angeles Clippers. Chu, a Dallas-native, played four years at the University of Richmond before joining Nike Basketball working in grassroots programs overseas. Chu focuses on analytics for the staff.
"We've got a group of guys that are excited to get to work and build a winning team" MacKinnon said. "This staff covers the spectrum in terms of experience and background and the different perspectives will be perfect for me and for our players. I look forward to learning from each of them as well coaching each of them along with the team."
The Legends will open their season on the road in Austin November 4th and will host the Oklahoma City Blue November 18th in their home debut. For the full schedule visit www.TexLegends.com.
