Greenville Drive News Release

The Greenville Drive (7-11) will be very happy to return home, as the road was not kind to them this weekend. The Lexington Legends (8-10) used stellar pitching all series long to stifle the Drive bats, and that continued on Sunday as they picked up a 6-3 victory to complete a four-game sweep.

The Legends took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth against Drive reliever Austin Maddox (0-2). Nicholas Cuckovich reached on an error and advanced all the way to third on a sacrifice bunt by Raul Mondesi. Maddox then uncorked a wild pitch during the next at-bat to give Lexington the lead.

The Drive jumped on the board early, scoring three unearned runs in the top of the first against Legends starter Aroni Nina. An error, a single by Jose Vinicio and a walk loaded the bases for Aneury Tavarez, who lifted a sacrifice fly to left field that was dropped by Lexington left fielder Terrance Gore, allowing all three runners to score and putting Tavarez on third. Nina struck out the final two batters of the inning to escape further damage.

Lexington got a run back in the bottom of the first as Bubba Starling lifted a Brian Johnson offering over the wall in left for a solo homer.

The Legends tied the game up in the fifth against Maddox. Singles by Humberto Arteaga, Starling and Jin-Ho Shin loaded the bases. Fred Ford followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to make the score 3-2, then Gore's infield single plated Starling to tie the game.

The Legends added a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth for good measure. After a double by Gore, a walk by Yowill Espinal and a bunt single by Cuckovich, Mondesi lined a single to left field to score Gore and Espinal.

Lexington got three perfect innings of relief from Ali Williams (1-0), who baffled Drive hitters to the tune of seven strikeouts during his stint. Clayton Schulz fired two scoreless innings with three strikeouts to record his first save of the season.

After an off day on Monday, the Drive return to Fluor Field on Tuesday afternoon to begin a three-game series with the Lakewood BlueClaws. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 PM. RHP Pat Light (1-0, 5.59) will take the mound for the Drive, while RHP Kevin Brady (0-2, 4.70) draws the start for the BlueClaws.

Tuesday afternoon's game at Fluor Field is the third annual "Drive Business Downtown" game sponsored by Elliott Davis. The game combines business and baseball by spotlighting the important role that downtown businesses play in the economic development and prosperity of the Upstate - recognizing key members in finance and banking, law, manufacturing, retail and non-profit.
