Youngstown Phantoms News Release

YOUNGSTOWN, OH - The Youngstown Phantoms put together one of its best performances of the season Sunday afternoon in Michigan, topping the Team USA U-18s by a final score of 2-1. Michigan native Noah Lalonde scored a shorthanded goal in the final minutes to propel Youngstown to victory.

"There's no words to describe how good that felt honestly. It's just great to help the team get a win, especially playing so close to my hometown," said Lalonde.

The two sides played the first 20 minutes scoreless, despite a handful of quality chances for each club. It wouldn't take long into the second period to break the deadlock however, as both teams would score within the first nine minutes.

The Phantoms drew first blood on the power play, when Chase Pearson deflected a Yushiroh Hirano shot past USA netminder Joseph Woll for his 10th tally of the year.

USA would respond minutes later to tie the contest, when Clayton Keller snuck a one-timer under the arm of Phantoms goaltender Ryan Bednard.

The back and forth action would continue, with each side failing to take the lead. Then, with just about eight minutes left in the contest, Phantoms forward James Winkler was assessed a 5 minute-major for checking from behind.

On the ensuing USA power play Noah Lalonde made an excellent individual effort, stealing the puck in the neutral zone and burying a shorthanded goal up over the shoulder of Woll to give the Phantoms a lead they would never relinquish.

Bednard turned aside 31 of 32 USA shot attempts to earn his second win in as many days.

The Phantoms will be back in action this Saturday at the Covelli Centre, taking on the Team USA 18s once again. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. eastern time.
