Stockton Ports News Release

STOCKTON, Calif. - The San Jose Giants plated a run in each of the last two innings to squeak by the Stockton Ports on Friday night at Banner Island Ballpark. San Jose broke a 2-2 tie with a two-out RBI single in the eighth and added an insurance run with a two-out RBI double in the ninth to beat Stockton by a final of 4-2 in the opener of a three-game series.

San Jose opened the scoring with three straight hits and a sac-fly in the second. With one out, Jose Vizcaino, Jr. singled and Daniel Carbonell followed with an RBI double to give the Giants the initial lead. After Connor Sabanosh singled to put runners at the corners, Johneshwy Fargas hit a sac-fly to left to score Carbonell and make it a 2-0 ballgame.

Ports starter Angel Duno would go three innings and allow just the two second inning runs on five hits while striking out one.

The Ports got a run back in the bottom of the second. Seth Brown singled to open the frame and scored on a two-out RBI single by Mikey White to make it 2-1.

Giants starter Conner Menez pitched around singles in the third and fourth, but in the fifth Menez gave up back-to-back singles to White and Brett Siddall to open the inning. With one out, Branden Cogswell grounded a single into right field to score White and tie the game at 2-2.

Menez would not factor into the decision as he went five innings and allowed two runs on seven hits.

After Joey Wagman pitched a perfect fourth inning, Logan Shore (0-1) came on to pitch the fifth. Shore kept the Giants out of the run column through the seventh. In the eighth, however, Shore gave up a leadoff double to Ryan Howard. With Howard at second and two outs, Jonah Arenado lined a single into right field that scored Howard and gave the Giants a 3-2 lead.

Shore would suffer his first loss of the season after allowing one run on three hits in four innings of work.

Jared Lyons came on to pitch the ninth and issued a leadoff walk to Carbonell, who scored on a two-out RBI double by Ali Castillo that padded the Giants lead to 4-2.

Connor Kaden (1-0) pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh for the Giants and, in doing so, earned his first win of the season. Ryan Halstead (SV, 1) pitched around back-to-back singles with two outs in the ninth to earn his second save of the year.

The Ports and Giants play the middle game of their three-game series on Saturday night at Banner Island Ballpark. Sonny Gray (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will make the start for Stockton on a Major League rehab assignment, opposed by Giants right-hander Mike Connelly (1-1, 1.74 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
