Late Rally Sinks Nuts in 8-6 Loss

Modesto, CA. - In a back-and-forth game, a five-run eighth sent the Modesto Nuts to an 8-6 loss against the Stockton Ports on Saturday night at John Thurman Field in front of 4,263.
With Logan Sawyer (L, 0-1) on the mound in the eighth, in his third frame of relief for the Nuts (3-6), allowed two of the first three hitters to reach. John Nogowski whacked a RBI single to tie the game before Sanber Pimentel drove in a pair with a RBI double. James Harris followed with a two-run single to give the Ports (5-4) the lead for good.
The Nuts didn't go quietly in the ninth. With one out in the inning, the Nuts recorded three straight singles including a RBI single from Drew Weeks. After a strike out, the Nuts put the tying runs in scoring position with a double steal, but Kyle Finnegan got Troy Stein to groundout to end the game.
Collin Ferguson clubbed a two-run for the Nuts. Shane Hoelscher reached in all five plate appearances with two hits, two walks and one hit by pitch.
Carlos Navas (W, 1-0) tossed three innings out of the bullpen and struck out six in a row at one point while allowing just one run.
Carlos Polanco started for the Nuts and worked 5.2 innings allowing two earned runs on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
The Nuts will try to earn a split in the finale of the four-game set against the Ports.
