Late Rally Pushes Drive to 5-4 Victory
April 17, 2013 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release
The Greenville Drive (7-7) offense has struggled recently, and for seven innings on Wednesday night, they couldn't get a runner across. The eighth inning was a different story, as a five-run outburst gave them a 5-4 victory over the West Virginia Power (6-8) at Fluor Field. With the victory, the Drive managed to avoid a series sweep.
The big comeback began against new Power reliever David Jagoditsh (0-2), who began the inning with a walk, a strikeout, and two more walks to load the bases. David Chester broke up the shutout with a single to right field, scoring Mookie Betts and Boss Moanaroa. Drew Turocy followed by grounding a double down the left field line to plate Aneury Tavarez. During the next at-bat, Jagoditsh uncorked a wild pitch, scoring Chester to tie the game. After another walk, the Power brought in Pat Ludwig out of the bullpen to try and keep it tied up, but Jayson Hernandez refused to let that happen, as he bounced a single into left field to bring home Turocy with the eventual winning run.
The late rally made a winner out of Kyle Kraus (1-0), who threw three and a third innings of outstanding relief. He allowed just one hit and one walk while punching out five Power batters.
West Virginia scored the first run of the game in the top of the fifth against Drive reliever Pat Light. After issuing a two-out walk to Max Moroff, Dilson Herrera lined a double to left that scored Moroff from first base.
The Power added three more runs against Light in the sixth. Back-to-back singles by Stetson Allie and Eric Wood led off the frame, and an attempted put-out at third base on Wyatt Mathisen's sacrifice bunt was dropped for an error. Raul Fortunato followed with a single through the right side to score a run, while a wild pitch and an RBI single by Ashley Ponce scored the other two runs in the inning.
Red Sox left-hander Franklin Morales started the game for the Drive on a rehab assignment and threw three shutout innings while giving up one hit and issuing two walks while striking out one.
For the second consecutive night, Turocy picked up three hits to lead the Drive offense. Chester added two hits and two RBIs. Wood and Ponce each had a pair of hits for the Power.
Greenville travels to Lexington on Thursday to begin a four-game series. First pitch for Thursday night is scheduled for 7:05 PM. RHP Frank Montas (0-1, 6.48) will take the mound for the Drive.
