Late Rally Lifts Chiefs Past Wheat Kings

Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB. - The Brandon Wheat Kings run of collecting at least a point in a game has come to an end.
The Spokane Chiefs struck for three third period goals Tuesday night to score a come 6-4 victory over the Wheat Kings, who lost in regulation time for the first time this season.
The Wheat Kings, who are now 5-1-1-1 on the season, jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead only to see the Chiefs bounce back and even the score before the end of the opening frame.
In the second the two teams traded goals, setting the stage for an eventful third.
After Braden Schneider scored at the 4 minute mark to give Brandon a 4-3 lead, Spokane tied it with eight minutes to play, scored what turned out to be the game winner with 2:37 remaining and then add an empty netter in the final minute to seal the deal.
The Chiefs, who improved to 5-2-0-2 on the season, are expected to be a legitimate Western Conference contender this season and Brandon coach David Anning says that despite a good start his club lacked finish and that proved costly.
"When we find ourselves up a goal late in the third period on home ice, we expect to get the job done," Anning says. "We had a couple breakdowns late where we lost a step on a guy or lost a puck battle and it ended up costing us."
Eli Zummack and Zack Finley scored twice to lead the winners, with Finley's second goal the game winner.
Ethan McIndoe and Riley Woods rounded out the scoring for the Chiefs, who outshot Brandon 43-40.
Stelio Mattheos, Ridly Greig and Luka Burzan rounded out the scoring for the Wheat Kings, who will be hoping to get back in the win column Friday night when they continue their 5-game home stand against the Everett Silvertips.
Friday night's game will mark the homecoming of former Wheat King star Jordin Tootoo.
One of the most popular players in franchise history, Tootoo will be performing the ceremonial opening face-off before the game and will be available for autographs during the first intermission.
Brandon will then close out this home stand Saturday night vs. Calgary.
Tickets to both weekend games are on sale at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling (204) 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com.
