Late Rally Falls Short As York Prevails

May 17, 2013 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

The Lancaster Barnstormers simply started too late on Friday night.

York built an early 6-0 lead off Barnstormers' ace Dwayne Pollok then held on for a 6-4 victory over the Barnstormers in the opener of a four-game series at Sovereign Bank Stadium.

Lancaster has now lost four of its last five games. The War of the Roses stands at two games apiece.

Pollok (3-1) breezed through the first inning but needed to throw 52 pitches to get through the second. Andy Marte got the five-run inning in motion with a single off the end of the bat that dropped into short left center. Pollok then walked Jeff Fiorentino, and both runners moved ahead on a grounder to second by Wilson Batista. James Shanks, after fouling off a pair of two-strike pitches, hit a liner to right which skipped past Ryan Harvey's sliding try for a two-run double. Salvador Paniagua picked up the second walk of the inning, and, after a strikeout of Tyler Graham, Ruddy Yan notched the third to load the bases. Andres Perez found the alley in right center for a three-run triple and a 5-0 lead.

Fiorentino opened the third with a double to left center and eventually scampered home on a wild pitch. At that, York was done for the night as Pollok and the bullpen retired 17 of the last 18 Revolution hitters.

The deficit was slightly too big for the Barnstormers to overcome.

Brett Tomko (1-3) carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning when Gustavo Molina broke the spell with a one-out single to right. Lancaster would not reach the scoreboard until the next inning. Blake Gailen reached on a single off Tomko's glove, Travis Denker scalded a single that reached the wall in left, sending Gailen to third, and Daryle Ward belted a long sacrifice fly to right center.

Tomko was chased in the eighth. Kody Kirkland drew a leadoff walk from the right-hander, and Molina followed with a blast over the 37-foot "Arch Nemesis." Lancaster continued the rally with a single by Jerry Owens, but Rommie Lewis, despite a walk to Gailen, was able to keep the Barnstormers from scoring again in the eighth.

Lancaster put a huge scare into the Revolution and the home crowd of 5,294 in the ninth. Harvey cracked a long double over the head of Fiorentino in right, and Kevin Howard took Juan Rincon to right for a single. Rincon loaded the bases by hitting Kirkland in the forearm with a 1-2 pitch and fell behind Molina, 2-0. The long-time Minnesota Twin recovered, inducing a 6-4-3 double play out of Molina as a run scored. Molina closed the night, earning his fourth save, by getting Owens to ground to first.

The two clubs meet again on Saturday at 6:30. Brian Grening (0-1) will make his second start for the Barnstormers, squaring off against lefty Chris Cody (2-1). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC; 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app beginning at 6:15.

NOTES: Olmo Rosario lost his hitting streak at 10 games...Owens has reached base in all 13 road games...Lancaster is now 2-11 on the road this season...The six runs and five walks were both highs for Pollok in a Barnstormers uniform...Ross Peeples made his fourth appearance in the last five games and his 277th as a Barnstormer...Jason Urquidez threw the eighth and recorded two more strikeouts...He has 14 in 7 2/3 innings.
