The Idaho Falls Chukars dropped the first of four games against the Casper Ghosts at Mike Lansing Field 8-4 Monday night. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak.
The Ghosts scored all eight runs in the first five innings off of Chukars starter Greg Billo. Five of the eight runs given up by Billo were earned runs. Billo, who is a top contender to finish with season with the most strikeouts in the Pioneer League, had just three on the night. Behind Billo, Tyler Graham pitched an inning and two thirds without allowing a run and Michael Mariot retired all six batters he faced in two innings of work.
The first three runs for the Ghosts were unearned during the second inning. In the fourth three more runs were scored, highlighted by a two-run Corey Dickerson home run. Jeff Squire hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning to put the Ghosts in front 8-0. The Chukars first run came in the eighth inning when Jovan Pickett reached on a single, stole second, went to third on a passed ball, and scored on a Justin Trapp single. After Murray Watts reached first base on a walk to start the ninth inning, Malcom Culver hit a two-run home run. The Chukars got one more run in the ninth when Pickett came home from first thanks to a double by Juan Polonia.
The Chukars outhit the Casper Ghosts 12 to 10 in the loss. Pickett finished 3-for-4 while Trapp, Polonia and Mike Liberto all went 2-for-4.
The Chukars and Ghosts will continue the series Tuesday night at Mike Lansing Field. Game time is scheduled for 7:05.
