Late-Inning Rally Drops Cats
August 18, 2010 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Shane Carlson belted his second home run of the season, but the Hillcats couldn't pull out a late-inning victory and fell 4-2 to Myrtle Beach. Carlson extends his hitting streak to 14 games, one shy of the Hillcats season high.
For the third straight game, Myrtle Beach jumped on the Cats in the first inning. Gerry Rodriguez reached with a two-out single. Mike Jones reached on Shane Carlson's error to keep the inning alive. Then Cody Johnson hit a two-run double to put the Pelicans in front.
The Hillcats offense struggled to begin the game, managing just two infield hits through three innings against starter Paul Clemens. The Cats finally broke through in the fourth. Carlson blasted a two-out home run over the scoreboard in left field to pull Lynchburg within one.
In the sixth, the Hillcats drew level. Neftali Soto reached on an error by third baseman Samuel Sime to lead off the inning, and advanced to third on Chris Richburg's single. Kyle Day then grounded into a double play, scoring Soto from third and evening up the score at two.
The score stayed that way until the top of the ninth. Reliever Jeff Jeffords walked Samuel Sime to start the inning. After Shawn McGill struck out, L.V. Ware reached on an error by Soto. It was a two-base error that put runners at second and third. With the infield in, Cole Miles punched a single into left, scoring Sime and Ware. Myrtle Beach took a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth.
Lynchburg got a one-out base hit by Carlson, but Josh Fellhauer grounded into a double play to end the game.
Josh Ravin made his second start with Lynchburg. After earning Carolina League Pitcher of the Week, Ravin followed that up with four and one-third innings pitched. He allowed two runs, but both were unearned, and struck out seven. Andrew Bowman induced a double play to end the fourth and didn't allow a run in one and two-thirds innings. Jeff Jeffords followed Bowman and struck out a season-high five. But he gets the loss after allowing the two runs to score.
Lynchburg and Myrtle Beach conclude their series tomorrow night at 7:05. The Hillcats send out Justin Walker (2-1, 6.57) opposite Brett Oberholtzer (4-5, 4.43). City Stadium hosts another "Thursday Cheers" presented by Miller Lite and Yuengling. Gates open at 6 p.m.
