Late Heroics Give Chops Thrilling 3-2 Win Over Flames

January 16, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Iowa Chops News Release

Eric Boguniecki's goal with :24 seconds remaining in the game snapped the Chops three-game winless streak and gave Iowa a 3-2 win over the Quad City Flames on Friday night in Des Moines. The 1st period in Friday night's game against the Flames went scoreless, but it wasn't without its chances. The Flames had the majority of the offense to open the game, but Iowa Chops goaltender David LeNeveu, who was in net for the first time since suffering an injury a week ago against Manitoba. LeNeveu made some quality saves early to keep the Flames off the board. Both teams had two power plays in the opening 20 minutes, but failed to register a goal. Quad City ended up outshooting the Chops 11-6 in the period. The Quad City Flames scored the game's first goal in the 2nd period, as Chops goaltender David LeNeveu denied a shot from the side by Chris Chucko, but the rebound squirted free in front to an open Kyle Greentree who hammered home a shot past an outstretched LeNeveu for the first goal. The Chops made a surge late in the period and helped out by a 4 on 3 power play, Brian Salcido hammered a shot from the point past a screened Leland Irving to tie the game at 1-1 on Salcido's 5th goal of the season. Assists went to TJ Trevelyan and Matt Beleskey, who provided the screen in front. The power play goal was the first in three games for the Chops as they went into the 2nd intermission tied at 1-1. The period was by far and away the most exciting of the entire game. The Chops started it off by taking their first lead of the game, thanks to a goal off the stick of TJ Trevelyan, who got behind the defense to sneak a Petteri Wirtanen pass underneath Irving for a 2-1 lead. Brian Salcido would also pick up an assist on the goal. The Flames, fueled by a power play, came right back as Kyle Greentree tucked home a one-timer down low past a helpless David LeNeveu to tie the game at 2-2. The remainder of the period saw both teams play very conservatively not wanting to make a mistake in the final stretches. However, that mistake was made with less than :30 seconds remaining in the game as Chops forward Eric Boguniecki broke free behind the Flames defense at the tail end of his shift, got an open ice pass from Wirtanen and raced in on a breakaway beating Irving with a slapshot from 20 feet out that roared past Irving's blocker glove with only :24 seconds remaining in the game. The win moved the Chops into sole possession of 2nd place in the AHL's West Division and sets up a #1 vs. #2 showdown tomorrow in Des Moines as the 1st place Milwaukee Admirals pay a visit to play the Iowa Chops. Face-off time at the Wells Fargo Arena Saturday is 7:05pm. Tickets can be purchased by calling 564-8700 or at www.iowachops.com
