Last Minute Heartbreak for Tigers
February 3, 2016 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Medicine Hat Tigers News Release
Medicine Hat, AB - The Medicine Hat Tigers closed out a very long weekend of hockey on Sunday playing 3 games in 3 nights. Injuries and even the flu bug have hit the Tigers once again this season as Sunday against Moose Jaw the orange and black had 4 regular defenseman. Tuesday they were back at it as Swift Current made their first visit to the Canalta Centre.
The opening showed how close these teams were, not only in the standings but on the ice. The Broncos came out with a flurry of action but Tigers netminder Nick Schneider was dialed in on this night. Swift Current would open the scoring however as Tyler Steenbergen netted his 10th of the year as he was recipient of a pass from teammate Max Lajoie. Medicine Hat would battle back however when on a delayed penalty Brian Williams fed Steven Owre all alone at the side of the net to pot his 13th of the year. Owre has played at a point per game clip since returning to the lineup from long term injury. The two clubs finished the opening 20 minutes tied 1-1.
Second periods have always been good for the Tabbies but Tuesday evening the Broncos took some of the momentum away as they pushed hard for the equalizer. Head Coach Mark Lamb, a former Tiger himself, set his boys in the neutral zone trap for majority of the period, hampering the Tigers opportunity to take the lead. Local defenseman Dylan MacPherson who was just listed by the Tigers after the Christmas break made his Canalta Centre debut in front of family and friends as the stay at home defender even saw ice time in a tie game late in the third. After 40 minutes of action, the two teams remained tied.
Fatigue started to set in for the Tigers as the third period dragged on. The Broncos, who were well rested heading into the game, took control of the shot clock, out shooting Medicine Hat 18-7 in the final frame. Nick Schneider was very good, keeping the Tabbies in the game shot after shot. Heartbreak would come along for Schneider and the Tigers with under a minute left to go. A tired Tigers line was caught on the ice as Lane Pederson flung a blind pass to the point to Colby Sissons, his point shot was deflected by the Tigers and right on the tape of 20 year old Scott Feser to net the game winning goal with 52 seconds left.
THREE STARS OF THE GAME:
1. NICK SCHNEIDER - MH - (38 SAVES, L)
2. TAZ BURMAN - SC - (28 SAVES, W)
3. TYLER STEENBERGEN - SC - (1G)
Medicine Hat now has a couple days off to heal injuries and get over illness before heading on a 2 game road trip to Regina and Brandon as the Monster Trucks invade the Canalta Centre over the weekend.
