April 5, 2012 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

Ben Lasater's grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning broke open a close game and finished with five RBI to lead the New Orleans Zephyrs to a 6-2 win over the Nashville Sounds on Opening Night at Zephyr Field.

The game was tied 1-1 going into the bottom of the eighth when 2011 Zephyr Victor Garate entered the game for Nashville . Cole Armstrong led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kevin Mattison . Scott Cousins singled up the middle to plate Armstrong with the go-ahead run.

After Donavan Solano was hit by a pitch, Bryan Petersen singled to load the bases. Garate struck out Gil Velasquez for the second out, but Lasater greeted reliever Vinnie Chulk with a grand slam over the left-center field wall to clear the bases.

The Zephyrs took the lead in the second inning when Nick Green and Lasater led off with back-to-back doubles.

The lead stood until the fourth when Eric Farris singled with one out. Farris was running on a 3-2 pitch to Caleb Gindl, which was laced into the right-center field gap for an RBI double.

Nashville had a sixth-inning rally thwarted when, with runners at first and second with two outs, Sean Halton's ground ball to short hit Gindl while running the base paths for the second time in the game ending the threat.

Halton was credited with infield singles on both occurrences, and later added a solo home run in the ninth to finish 4-for-4.

Gary Glover (1-0) got the win in relief, pitching two innings. Alex Sanabia scattered nine hits and one run across seven innings and struck out five. Garate (0-1) took the loss for the Sounds, giving up four runs and three hits.

Scott Cousins and Lasater led with two hits apiece.

The Zephyrs are now 11-9 all-time on Opening Day.

The Zephyrs and Sounds resume the series on Friday at 7pm. Left-hander Brad Hand will make his Triple-A for the Zephyrs and right-hander Mike Fiers will get the start for Nashville .
