Iowa Cubs News Release

DES MOINES - The Iowa Cubs (41-51) dropped a close 3-2 contest to the Las Vegas 51s (47-43) in the first game back from the All-Star Break, Thursday at Principal Park.

Joe Nathan, on a major league rehab assignment, made his Iowa Cubs debut. Entering in the eighth, the righty sat down the side in order including two on strikes. Mark Zagunis led Iowa's offensive effort with a 2-for-4 game and one RBI, while Juan Perez went 2-for-2 with a run.

Rob Zastryzny limited Las Vegas to one run on six hits through four innings, but the lefty got into some trouble in the fifth when pitcher Darin Gorski roped a leadoff single to center. Zastryzny put two on with two out after issuing a walk to Michael Conforto. Eric Campbell took advantage and belted a line drive to left field that fooled Matt Murton and fell in for a two-RBI double.

Zastryzny (4-3) took the mound for the sixth and dished up a walk on five pitches before getting removed due to injury. He ended his night with three earned runs over five innings, while walking three and whiffing three to take the loss.

Zagunis laced Iowa's sole hit through the first five frames, thanks to Gorski's (3-1) dazzling performance from the mound. Perez and John Andreoli broke the offensive draught with back-to-back singles to leadoff the sixth. Zagunis remained hot, drilling a single to put Iowa on the board. Daniel Vogelbach ripped a base hit to center to pull Iowa within a run, but the comeback effort was halted when Zagunis was cut down at third on the play to end the inning.

Both teams posted zeros through the next three innings, helping Las Vegas secure the series opener.

The I-Cubs and 51s play game two of the four-game set at 7:08 p.m., Friday at Principal Park with fireworks following the contest. Upcoming promotions include Pre-Game Catch on the Field Saturday and Albert Almora Jr. Jersey Shirt Night Monday. For more information or tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
