April 20, 2017 - California League (CalL) - Lancaster JetHawks
LANCASTER, Calif. - Peter Lambert tossed six shutout innings, but the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes hit a pair of solo homers in the seventh and held on for a 2-1 victory over the JetHawks on Wednesday night at The Hangar.
Lambert, pitching a day after his 20th birthday, allowed just three hits. He did not walk a batter, struck out two, and retired the final seven hitters he faced.
Max Schuh (0-2) took over for Lambert in the seventh and Will Smith hit his first pitch out to tie the game. Two batters later, Ariel Sandoval went deep to put the Quakes up for good. It was Rancho Cucamonga's first lead in the series since the first inning on Monday night.
The JetHawks took the lead in the second inning.
Mylz Jones was hit by a pitch to open the frame and later came around to score on a wild pitch by Quakes starter Caleb Ferguson. The left-hander didn't allow a hit in 3.2 innings, but walked five.
Lancaster finished the game with only two hits. Tony Gonsolin (1-0) earned the win for the Quakes in his High-A debut. The first batter he faced, Wilson Soriano, singled sharply to left. After that, Gonsolin retired 10 in a row to complete his outing. He struck out three.
Shea Spitzbarth recorded a six-out save for Rancho Cucamonga, his third in as many opportunities. After a perfect eighth inning, Mylz Jones singled with one out in the ninth for the JetHawks. Two batters later with two out, Roberto Ramos was summoned to pinch hit and Spitzbarth struck him out swinging on a 3-2 pitch to end the game.
The four-game series concludes on Thursday night at The Hangar. Right-hander Carlos Polanco (0-1) will start for Lancaster against right-hander Dennis Santana (0-1). First pitch is 6:35 p.m.
