Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release

LAKEWOOD, NJ - The Lakewood BlueClaws (4-10/30-51) had their chances, but could not score late and fell 3-1 to the Delmarva Shorebirds (7-7/37-44) Wednesday night at FirstEnergy Park. The loss dropped the BlueClaws record on the seven-game homestand to 2-5.

The Birds and Claws took a 1-1 tie game into the sixth inning, but it was Delmarva that took advantage of the laboring Lakewood starter for two runs.

After Miguel Nunez retired Tucker Nathans to begin the inning, he walked Creede Simpson for the first runner of the frame. Simpson stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by the catcher Justin Dalles. Nunez walked the next hitter, Torsten Boss, and his night came to an end with runners at the corners and one out.

Geoff Broussard was the first pitcher used in relief and picked up the second out of the inning on a weak foul pop out off the bat of Roderick Bernadina. Broussard followed with a strikeout of Steel Russell, but a wild pitch allowed all of the runners to advance safely and gave Delmarva the 2-1 lead. Adrian Marin singled to center to score Boss and put the Birds up 3-1.

The BlueClaws responded with two one-out singles in the bottom half of the inning, but could not push any runs across. Lex Rutledge pitched three scoreless innings of relief before he turned it over to Dennis Torres.

Torres worked through the eighth in scoreless fashion and worked the ninth in scoreless fashion for his first save of the season.

Both teams jumped on the board with a run apiece in the early innings. Delmarva took the 1-0 lead in the second on an RBI double off the bat of Russell that plated Simpson from first against Nunez.

The BlueClaws responded an inning later when Dalles hit a sacrifice fly to right that scored Angelo Mora and tied the game at 1-1.

Nunez (5-7) lost his sixth straight decision and fell for the seventh time in eight starts. He delivered five and one-third innings and allowed three runs on five hits; he walked four and struck out one.

Bennett Parry took the mound for Delmarva and made his first start and sixth appearance for the Baltimore affiliate. The southpaw tossed four innings and allowed the one run on three hits, a walk, and three strikeouts. Rutledge (4-2) earned the win with his three scoreless innings.
