Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Aberdeen, MD- The IronBirds could not hold onto a late lead and fell to the Vermont Lake Monsters 7-5. The loss drops the IronBirds back to .500 at 17-17.

On rehab assignments, Steve Johnson pitched 2 1/3 innings of 4-strikeout ball, and Jonathan Schoop lined a go-ahead two-run double in the fifth as part of a 2-5 performance in his second rehab start with the IronBirds.

Johnson, rehabbing a strained left oblique muscle that has kept him on the MLB Disabled List since June 6th, started off strong. He was involved in the first two plays of the evening, making a nice stab of a ground ball and moving well covering first on a ground ball to first. But Lake Monsters' right fielder Tyler Marincov crushed a Johnson fastball over the center field fence, and Vermont led 1-0 after one inning.

Johnson looked sharp in the second inning. He spotted his fastball well and used his off-speed effectively, striking out the side around a two-out single.

The IronBirds would tie the game in the second, as Mike Yastrzemski knocked an triple into the right center field gap, plating Trey Mancini.

Johnson would come back out for the third inning, but after putting runners on the corners with one out, he would be removed from the game, relieved by Dylan Rheault. Rheault would allow 1 inherited runner to score, but induced a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning and keep the deficit at 2-1.

The score would stay that way until the bottom of the fifth inning. The IronBirds led off the frame with three consecutive singles from Austin Wynns, who had 4 hits on the night, Manny Hernandez, and George Barber. After a strikeout, Sam Kimmel lofted a sac fly to center, knotting the game at 2. Schoop stepped to the plate, and with two outs and two strikes, smacked a bullet into the right field corner, scoring both Hernandez and Barber. Trey Mancini followed with another double to right-center, knocking in Schoop and giving the IronBirds a 5-2 lead.

The Lake Monsters would score in the 7th, but they would complete the comeback in the 8th . They would tally four runs on four hits off of two IronBirds' relievers, capped off by a go-ahead two-run triple off the bat of designated hitter Jayson Brugman. Brugman would later score on a wild pitch, giving the Lake Monsters a 7-5 advantage.

The IronBirds would put two on with two out in the 8th, but would not score. In the 9th, Schoop singled to center with two outs, and after lacing a ball just foul down the right field line, Trey Mancini struck out to end the game.

The Lake Monsters move up to .500 with the win, and will go for the sweep tomorrow. RHP Sebastian Vader (2-3, 2.79 ERA) will go for Aberdeen, while Vermont will counter with LHP Jose Torres (3-2, 2.28 ERA).
