Lancaster JetHawks News Release

LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. - Jose Hernandez delivered a quality start in his Cal League debut but the JetHawks were unable to muster enough offense in a 4-3 loss to the Lake Elsinore Storm on Monday night at The Diamond.

The loss dropped the JetHawks (54-45, 19-11) into second place, a half-game behind the Storm (52-49, 20-11) in the second-half standings.

Down 4-0 in the eighth inning, the JetHawks were able to mount a rally but ended up leaving the potential tying run at third base to end the game. The club finished the game 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position.

Facing a three-run deficit in the ninth, Jamie Ritchie walked and Aaron Mizell doubled him to third base to start the frame. Ritchie scored on a one-out Keach Ballard sac-fly and Bobby Boyd pulled a run-scoring double down the left field line to bring Mizell to the plate. Boyd would move to third on a wild pitch, but closer Phil Maton painted the inside corner on a 3-2 pitch to Jason Martin for strike three to end the game. Maton earned his sixth save.

The JetHawks picked up their first run in the eighth inning when Boyd scored on a two-out wild pitch.

Hernandez (0-1) allowed just one run through six innings in his first JetHawks start. The 22-year-old allowed back-to-back base hits to start the seventh and was removed after a sacrifice bunt. Jacob Dorris came on to strike out Michael Gettys, but the next batter, Edwin Moreno, turned on a 2-2 pitch and hit it over the wall for a three-run homer.

Moreno had delivered the Storm's first run of the game in the fifth inning. With two outs and nobody on, Gettys hit a ground ball to the left of third baseman Trent Woodward. Woodward backed up to field it, and by the time he threw to first, Gettys had beaten the play for an infield hit. Moreno followed by lining a ball to right field that skipped past the diving Boyd and went to the wall. Gettys scored to break the scoreless tie.

Hernandez ended up allowing three runs on five hits over 6.1 innings. He struck out five and walked three.

Storm starter Enyel De Los Santos (2-3) allowed one hit over five scoreless innings to pick up the win.

The three-game series continues from The Diamond on Tuesday night. Brock Dykxhoorn (6-3) will make the start against Zech Lemond (3-3). First pitch is 6 p.m.
