Lack of 'O' Made up by O'Grady

Daytona Tortugas News Release

Jupiter, FL - Brian O'Grady drew a bases loaded walk in the ninth inning to give the Daytona Tortugas a 2-1 win against the Jupiter Hammerheads at Roger Dean Stadium Sunday night. It was one of four times on-base for O'Grady, who has driven in five runs over the last seven games.

Daytona put the first two runners on in the ninth inning with a Jonathan Reynoso bunt single and Blake Butler getting hit by a pitch. Blake Trahan moved the pair over on his team-high seventh sacrifice bunt of the season. After Aristides Aquino was intentionally walked to load the bases, Angelo Gumbs struck out on three swings for the second out of the inning. However, O'Grady was a tougher out, winning the eight-pitch battle to bring home Reynoso from third on ball four to give Daytona the 2-1 lead they would never relinquish.

The game began with a battle between the starting pitchers in Daytona's RHP Wendolyn Bautista and Jupiter's RHP Jeff Brigham. After both starters tossed a pair of scoreless innings, the Tortugas cracked the scoreboard first in their half of the third inning. With two outs, Trahan and Aquino singled to put runners at first and second. Gumbs followed with a run-scoring single, plating Trahan for the 1-0 edge. It was the 10th RBI in Gumbs' last 13 games and part of a stretch of five consecutive hits against Brigham.

That score would hold until the bottom of the seventh when Jupiter finally solved Bautista. The inning started with a leadoff walk to Taylor Ard. It was the only walk issued by Bautista in his first 11 1/3 innings of work with Daytona this year. Ard moved to second on a sacrifice bunt before Avery Romero singled to centerfield to put runners at the corners. Chris Hoo came to the plate and dropped a safety squeeze down the first base line, which brought home the tying run home on an O'Grady bobble to knot the game at 1-1.

Brigham lasted 5 2/3 innings and allowed the one run on six hits, while striking out six. RHP Esmerling De La Rosa (2-2) suffered the loss, as he allowed the go-ahead run in the ninth inning. RHP Ariel Hernandez (1-0) notched his first victory as a member of the Reds organization with a scoreless 1 2/3 innings. RHP Jimmy Herget earned his 10th save in as many chances to preserve the Tortuga win.

The Tortugas will return to Roger Dean Stadium Monday night with RHP Tyler Mahle (7-3, 2.82 ERA) getting the start. He will counter LHP James Buckelew (2-0, 2.68 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM with the Chili's pre-game show beginning at 6:20 PM on AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB.

Notes: It was the second time Daytona committed four errors in their last four games...Bautista, in his first two starts with Daytona, has allowed one earned run in 11 1/3 innings of work...O'Grady finished the night 2-for-3 with a pair of walks along with the go-ahead RBI. He has hit safely in eight of his last 11 games.
