May 27, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
Erie SeaWolves News Release

The SeaWolves took down the Reading Phillies on Tuesday night at Jerry Uht Park behind eight solid innings out of starter Andrew Kown to win their third game in the last four tries.

The SeaWolves broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning. Will Rhymes led off and doubled down the left field line. The double was his ninth of the season. Rhymes moved over to third on a ground ball to the right side by Max St. Pierre to give Erie a man at third with less than two outs. Justin Justice followed with a sacrifice fly to left to bring home Rhymes, giving the ‘Wolves a 1-0 lead.

The Phillies threatened in the top of the fourth against Kown but he worked out of his only major jam of the night. Luke Appert led off with a single. Kown got the next two outs by striking out Jason Donald and Greg Golson. Lou Marson followed with a two-out single to put a pair on and Joey Hammond walked to load the bases. Kown then got Jeremy Slaydon to pop out to end the inning.

Erie would add to the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Deik Scram led off and reached on an error. Jeff Frazier followed with a single for his second hit of the night to put runners on the corners for Wilkin Ramirez. Frazier has two hits in each of his last two games. Ramirez followed with a base hit to center, scoring Scram to make it 2-0 Erie. With two outs and runners at the corners, St. Pierre singled home Frazier to put the ‘Wolves ahead 3-0.

The Phillies got on the board in the top of the eighth inning when Brad Harmon homered to left for his fifth of the season to break up the ‘Wolves shutout bid. The home run was Kown's only mistake in the game.

Kown worked 7.1 scoreless and eight overall to pick up the win and improve to 3-5 on the season. It was his second straight outing where he worked six or more innings and the eight innings pitched was a season-high. His previous season-high in innings pitched in a game was on April 16 when he went seven in a win over Altoona. Kown walked one batter and struck out five. He has collected 16 strikeouts in his last 18.2 innings pitched. In the game, Kown faced the minimum in six of his eight innings.

Casey Fien retired the side in order in the ninth inning to pick up his second save of the season.
