Komets Collect Four Points for Week 16

Fort Wayne, IN - The Komets gained four points in three games for week 16 of 2015-16 and improved to 25-14-2 and 52 points. Fort Wayne continues to hold first place in the Midwest Division of the ECHL's Western Conference with a four-point margin over second-place Indy with 10 weeks remaining.
The Komets stopped the Cincinnati Cyclones 4-1 Friday in Fort Wayne for a winning start to the week. Mike Embach netted a pair of back-to-back goals in the first period before a scoreless second frame. Joe Perry gave the Komets a 3-0 lead before Jack Downing put the Cyclones on the board with 1:38 remaining in the match. Shawn Szydlowski sealed the victory at 4-1 with 12 seconds remaining as the Komets earned their 1500th regular season home win since the initial 1952-53 season. Defenseman Jordon Southorn logged his third three-assist game of the season while Goaltender Pat Nagle registered his 18th win of the season making 25 saves on 26 shots in his 30th appearance of the year.
Saturday the Komets fell 2-1 to the Walleye in Toledo. Trevor Cheek, fresh from a reassignment from the AHL's San Antonio Rampage to Fort Wayne, scored the lone Komet goal on the power play. Nagle suffered the loss allowing two goals on 26 shots. The Komets continue to hold the season series lead 3-2-0 with four meetings remaining.
Sunday the Komets capped the week and the month of January with a 6-2 grounding of the Wings in Kalamazoo. Defenseman Cody Sol fashioned his first three-point game of the season with three assists. Komet goals were scored by six different players including Brock Montgomery, Jamie Schaafsma, Mason Geertsen, Cheek, Brett Perlini and Embach. Embach also added a pair of assists for his second three-point outing of the weekend and fourth of the season as the Komets improved to 6-1-0 against Kalamazoo with two meetings remaining. It was the fifth time this season Fort Wayne has reached six goals in a game.
The Komets posted a 10-4-0 record for the 14 games in January. It was the first time the Komets reached 10 wins in January since they were also 10-4-0 for January, 2008. It's the first time the Komets reached 10 wins in a single month since February, 2012 when they were 10-4-1.
Special K's-- The Komets had power play markers in each game of the week (3/11) to lead the ECHL with a power play rating of 23.4%. Fort Wayne ranks second with a penalty kill rating of 88.6%. The Komets were 10-for-10 on the penalty kill for the week and have killed off 40 straight power plays over the last 12 games. The K's have posted 66 successful penalty kills out of 67 in the last 20 games, dating back to Dec. 18.
Streaking Komets-- The Komets extended their home win streak to five games with their 4-1 win Friday against Cincy and are riding a nine-game home unbeaten streak (8-0-1).....Brett Perlini has a nine-game home point-streak (4g, 9a).....Shawn Szydlowski has a four-game home point streak (1g, 4a).....Pat Nagle has wins in his last five straight home starts....Trevor Cheek picked up where he left off by scoring points in each of his two appearances after returning Saturday and has a three-game point-scoring streak (2g, 2a) with the Komets.
Milestones-- Defenseman Will Weber skated his 200th career game Friday in Fort Wayne.....Defenseman Mason Geertsen, appearing in his first three ECHL games this past weekend, scored his first pro goal in the Komets' 6-2 win at Kalamazoo Sunday....Netminder Sean Bonar earned his third ECHL win and first with Fort Wayne Sunday at Kalamazoo.
THE WEEK AHEAD
Rise and shine! The Komets will skate an 11am game Tuesday at Brampton (14-19-9,37 points) as the Beast host a special School Day Game. The season series is even at 1-1-1 with Tuesday's match serving as the rubber game of the series. It will be the second and final trip of the season to the Powerade Centre (5,000) in Brampton. The Komets were held scoreless in a 2-0 affair on their first ever trip to Brampton Nov. 22. The Beast are coached by former Komet Colin Chaulk and are in fourth place in the North Division of the Eastern Conference, trailing first-place Toledo by 21 points with 30 games remaining. Brampton is 2-3-2 in their last seven games and are coming off a 3-2 overtime loss to Wheeling Sunday.
The Komets return home Saturday to face the Quad City Mallards at 7:30pm. Division rival Quad City (19-19-5, 43 points) holds a 2-1-0 series edge with four meetings remaining. Saturday's match is the first appearance of four this season by the Mallards who trail the first-place Komets by 17 points. Quad City is winless in their last six games (0-4-2) and will host Rapid City Wednesday and Friday before making the trip to Fort Wayne Saturday.

Report Card Night Saturday--The Komets present their second PHP Report Card Night of the year this Saturday when the Quad City Mallards visit for a 7:30pm faceoff. Students with an "A" or "A Equivalent" on their most recent report card earn a free ticket and a chance to win a $1,000 U.S. Savings Bond for future education. Students can take their report card or a letter from their teacher showing an "A" or an "A equivalent" to the Coliseum Ticket Office between now and game night.
