June 6, 2017 - Prospect League (Prospect) - Kokomo Jackrabbits
KOKOMO, IND. - The Kokomo Jackrabbits found out what other Prospect League teams have learned early in 2017. That being the fact that Lafayette Aviators' starter Caleb Sleeman is a tall task to handle.
Following a pair of stints against Springfield and Danville that saw him touched for just one earned run in seven and two-thirds frames, the Michigan State Spartan kept his roll going, limiting the home team to just one run on five hits over eight and third innings. Manager Gary McClure's club made a bid in its last at-bat to complete a rally back from a once 2-0 deficit, as catcher Collin Butkiewicz singled with one out, advanced to second on a ground out and made it within ninety feet of tying the game due to a balk. However, Aviators' relief pitcher Brian Sharp worked around a walk and forced a ground out to end the contest at 2-1.
Kokomo's offense was topped by shortstop Andrew Curran who had two hits. Right fielder Austin Petravicius added an RBI and safety, while designated hitter Alex Del Rio, the Coca-Cola Player of the Game, doubled and scored the Brown and Gold's run. It was more sterling news from the Jackrabbits' bullpen, as PL Pitcher of the Week Quintin Miller and Trey Bickel combined for four strikeouts over the final two and third frames after starter Mike Anthony worked around six visiting safeties with three strikeouts in six and a third innings.
The two league rivals resume the 2017 edition of the Battle for State Highway 26 Wednesday, June 7. First pitch at Kokomo Memorial Stadium is 6:35 p.m. It's the second Family Wednesday promotion of the year, as a package of two dugout reserved tickets, two hot dogs and two sodas are $20.
