Knights Edge Chiefs in Series Finale

August 25, 2013 - International League (IL1)
Syracuse Mets News Release

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, lost to the Charlotte Knights, 3-1, on Sunday . Corey Brown was 1-for-2 with two walks in the game.

Charlotte (61-74) got on the board in the top of the second inning. With two outs, Steve Tolleson launched a Jeff Mandel pitch over the left-field wall for a 1-0 Knights advantage.

That lead was extended in the sixth inning. With two outs, Blake Tekotte singled to first base. Brent Morel followed with a single of his own to left field. Tyler Robertson then came in to relieve Mandel. The next batter, Travis Ishikawa, smacked a triple to right-center field that scored two runs to give Charlotte a 3-0 lead.

Syracuse (64-72) got its first run in the bottom of the seventh inning against Charlotte starter Jason Berken. Danny Espinosa was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame. Brown then singled on the ground to right field. The next batter, Chris Marrero, walked to load the bases for Zach Walters. He grounded into a fielder's choice, but Espinosa scored from third to cut the deficit to 3-1.

That was all the Chiefs could do against Berken, though. He went seven innings, gave up one run on two hits and struck out six. Two Knights relievers combined to keep Syracuse from crossing the plate in the final two innings.

Syracuse starts a two-game set with Rochester on Monday at 7:00 . The Chiefs send right-hander Caleb Clay to the bump against right-hander P.J. Walters.
