Charlotte Knights News Release
FORT MILL, S.C. - September 3, 2009 - What looked to be a promising start for the Charlotte Knights turned into a nightmare, as Durham pounded out 17 hits in a 14-3 victory over Charlotte.
The Knights got all of their offense from outfielder Stefan Gartrell-who was responsible for all of their runs in the game-with two home runs. Trailing 1-0, Gartrell hit his third homer of the season with Keith Ginter on board, giving Charlotte a lead 2-1 in the bottom of the 1st. After the Bulls tied the game at 2-2, Charlotte once again took the lead in the bottom of the 3rd with Gartrell's second homer, a solo shot to left field. That was it for the Knights offense.
Durham managed to knock in five more runs before closing the door completely on the Knights with a 6-run inning in the top of the 8th. Bulls centerfielder Desmond Jennings had a record-worthy game, tying the International League record for most hits in a single game. Jennings' went 7-7 with four runs and three RBI. His seven hits tied him with former Pawtucket Red Sox Michael Coleman, who set the record in a game against Norfolk on June 4, 1999.
Knights pitcher Sergio Santos (0-1, 12.00) took the loss in his first appearance for Charlotte since joining the team on August 28. Durham's Joe Bateman (6-2, 2.74) picked up his 6th win.
Charlotte closes out the 2009 home season tomorrow and the series with Durham. The Knights will start left-hander Wes Whisler (10-11, 3.90). Jeremy Hellickson (5-1, 2.86) will take the mound for the Bulls. There will be a post-game fireworks show following the game. Gates open at 6 PM. Game time is 7:15 PM.
