Knighthawks To Battle For Outdoor Title This Weekend

(Rochester, August 17)... Joe Walters, Shawn Williams, Gary Gait and John Grant will try to win an outdoor championship for the Toronto Nationals this weekend at Navy-Marine Corp Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md. Toronto will take on the Long Island Lizards at 3:00 p.m. in the second semifinal game on Saturday, August 22nd at the Major League Lacrosse Championship Weekend. The other semifinal features the Denver Outlaws and Boston Cannons at noon. The winners advance to the finals at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 23rd.

This summer, Walters finished tied for sixth in points (42) in 12 games in the MLL. He is trying to win back-to-back titles after being named the Playoff MVP in 2008 with the Rochester Rattlers. Walters made his National Lacrosse League debut with his hometown Knighthawks in January. He played in 15 games and collected eight goals, 12 assists and 50 loose balls.

Grant will also try to win his second straight outdoor title. He made his return to the MLL on August 8th and scored five goals in a 16-10 win over Denver. The game was his first outdoor game since he helped the Rattlers win the MLL title on August 24, 2008. The Peterborough, Ontario, native missed the entire National Lacrosse League season after having three surgeries with the last being reconstructive knee surgery in January.

Forward Shawn Williams will shoot for his first MLL title in his first outdoor season. In 2009, he recorded nine goals and five assists in 10 games with Toronto. In the NLL, Williams led the Knighthawks with 93 points and set a team record with 67 assists in 2009.

Gait will attempt to win his fourth MLL title, but his first since the 2005 season, which was his last in the league before retiring. The Nationals' attackman won championships in 2001, 2002 and 2005. This season, he had two goals in three regular season games with Toronto. This past winter, he also made his indoor return and finished third on the team in goals (22) and fourth in points (37) in 11 games.
